Hey there,

I really love the cartridge and the fact that you can buy it cheaply.

I know the dragunov and all variants are banned here but was curious if there were any other rifles beside a mosin and svt 40 that one could buy to shoot the 7.62X54r Cartridge.

Thanks !

I read that already, most of these are based either on the dragunov (rpk?) action which is prohib except for a few I am unsure about such as the Alejandro, JS 7.62 and a few russian made sporters.

After talking to a few stores and gunsmith. there does not seem to be any other options except for the people who grandfathered their norinco svd back in 1995. Also because the cartridge is rimmed, making a conversion out of a BCL/Stag receiver or Tikka t3 action is not really doable.

Best bet is Mosin archangel stock as it is the only stock that supports a mag. Or a bubbarized tacticool svt 40 .

I hope someone proves me wrong and finds an obscure 7.62X54r that we can buy here.

The ones I've seen for purchase in Canada in 7.62x54R nowadays are all variants of the Mosin M91 (e.g. Remington and Westinghouse), the Finnish M91-based variants, the Winchester Model 1895 (pretty rare), the Mosin 91/30 (including a sniper), the Mosin M38&44 carbine and the SVT-38&40. Personally, I've never seen the Chinese JS 7.62 sniper in Canada.

I was offered a Pattern 14 rifle at the Vernon Gun show that had been re chambered to 7.62x54.

It was done on a cut back sporter. There was nothing military about it any longer, other than the bolt. It looked good but???????????? The "good ole boy" did the work himself to take advantage of the cheap surplus available. He was getting long in the tooth and did't appreciate the recoil, not to mention aging eyes. He also wanted way to much money for it.

Could we not take some sort of semi auto action like vz58 or type 81 etc and come up with one that can shoot 7.62x54r?
Yeah you would have to build a rifle from the ground up but would it be possible?
I would love to have a dragunov variant and it pushes me off we cant have it here
