my friend has a vanguard 7mm rem mag and has been using 160 gr sierra with imr 4350. he has run OCW's from 40 to 46 gr. and found nothing that looked like a node. has anyone out their found anything with this combo.

I never had much luck with 4350 in my 7mm, I have had better success with slower powder's- imr7828 & rl-22. But i'm no 7mm guru.. I only played with mine for a year or so & sold it off to support my .300 wm addiction. I'm sure some of the 7mm boy's will chime in & might have some better suggestion's.....

Cheer's

Accuracy Load: IMR-4064/ 50.9grs. 2800fps/ 2786ft. lbs.
Hunting Load: H4831 SC/ 63.6grs. 3000fps/ 3198ft. lbs.

From the Sierra Manual . . . why try to re-invent the wheel?

IMR-4350 50.1 52.7 55.3 57.9 59.2 60.5

Why would he be trying loads that are below the starting points?

I guess the first question needs to be do you have any slower powders or are you trying 4350 because that's all you have and/or can find? IMR 7828 is a great powder in the 7 mag and my old load of 66 grns of H4831 was super accurate in 3 different 7s...........and yes that load is from a manual from the 70s before lawyers started publishing loading manuals. Next question I would ask is why you're way down in the 40 some odd grains of powder.........that is much too low for a 7 mag, you should be in the high 50s....I just did a quick manual check and those are 7X57 loads..........you need to be between 55 and 60 grns with 4350..........You are way too far below starting loads and are not creating enough pressure to get any kind of consistent burn with your powder, that's why you can't find a node. If you want a reduced load use a quicker powder do NOT reduce slow powders like 4350, they need pressure to work properly.

will check and see what he has loaded them too, he was able to find that powder and it was one that had been used by others, I would have tried h1000.

its a standard vanguard off the shelf, not bedded .tasco scope. will talk to him about adding the pressure point. I have the same rifle in 257 wby mag and it shoots great.

40 to 46 grains of IMR4350 is way below minimum. 63.9 of IMR4350 is way over max. 56.0 to 59.5 for a 160 according to Hodgdon. He using a manual? And ladder testing doesn't really tell you much about how accurate a particular load is in your or your buddy's rifle.
63.6 is H4831 is over Hodgdon's max too. They're saying 60.0 is max.

Maybe you boy's need to look take a look @ the Berger Hybrid.....They have been working for me.... But I also would look @ bedding your action, checking that your scope is holding, action screw's, ring's & mount's, crown etc....eliminate all the maybe's first....How far from the rifling are you seating your bullet's ? I know it can be frustrating, but keep at it as I say that the clock is ticking toward opening day.........What else do you boy's have for powder ??? Just seen you are in Edson,,little closer to GP & I could help you out with some different powder;s to try......

Before I invested any more money, why not try some H-1000 & H-4831. Make sure you light them up with a mag primer. I would also try seating those bullet's around .020 off the land's to try & find something that looked promising, then adjust your seating depth to tweak. Double check your scope & all screw;s for proper torque. Have you checked the bedding area around the recoil lug...when you loosen the screw's , try sliding the action back in forth in the stock. The 7mm in a light weight rifle will have a bit of recoil......and also check you scope for holding zero & tracking correctly.

My 7mm Mag has a generous chamber, and digests larger quantities of powder to get the velocities.

With the 160 partition, I am using 68 grains of Norma MRP, or 67 grains of H4831SC, but do these loads shoot!
The MRP load consistently makes a ragged hole with 3 shots at 100M. The 4831 only slightly larger.

As usual, ignore Sunrays spouting. Most of what he says is just drivel to increase his post count.

Other great powders in the 7mm Mag/160 are [as noted] IMR7828, H1000, Vihtavuori N165, Reloder 22 and 25.

Regards, Dave.
