Oh, oh , I just realized something.
Without that red-spot on their heads the camo and natural cover those dogs would near be impossible to see in the hills.

95% of the coyotes I shoot are under 350 yards. The 40 gr bullet doesn’t exit. I usually take a head on chest shot, the coyote usually just tips over.
Furthest shot this year was 350. Closest was about 10. I don’t like them that close but sometimes they just won’t stop.
Missed one yesterday at 550 or so. Couldn’t get a good range as he was on the ice. Wasn’t coming in so I tried him.

My ecaller is on the fritz. I started using it but it wouldn’t turn off. So I used my Sceery distress hand call and Quaker Boy howler for most of them. Hand calls are more realistic I find. Overcalling is a problem with the e-caller I think.
Very nice! It has been a tough winter for me here, close to 40 sets, one dog seen and killed while actually hunting. Two dogs seen while driving to the next set. Close to zero responses in the form of howls back. Lots of fresh sign, found one deer kill site, just can't seem to be in the same place at the same time as they are. Very happy to see your success though! Keeps me motivated!
Crashman, I've noticed a lack of howls this winter too, except for one night when I went locating. In years past it seemed I hear more vocalizations. On 26 sets this winter, I have had one coyote bark at me before showing up. I'm 3/26 so I guess I can't complain too much. Still have 6 weeks to go yet
Thats not bad, 3/26. My hope is to see 1/10 on my hunting sets, so far that is not happening! We recently got a good dump of snow and I haven't been out in over a week, but I will be getting out later this week and maybe the weekend as well so we'll see how it goes. We got a bunch of new properties to hunt mid season and we haven't taken the time to properly scout them or learn the actual travel patterns, just hunting the edges and hoping to see something stick its head out.
