Thanks for all the PM's and replies to my other threads guys. Much appreciated. I have managed to work a deal / trade for a NIB Remington 700 5R chambered in 223.

I have spent the last few days going over the merits of the:

1.) SPS TACTICAL in 223
2.) 700 Police in 223
3.) 700 LTR in 223
4.) 700 5R in 223

From what I gather, the SPS is a great value - but may have issues with the stock touching the barrel with bipod use. Remedied by a stock swap usually. Handy short heavy barrel is good for hunting / carrying.

The police has a decent stock, shoots well from the factory, but serves more as a bench platform due to its weight and 26 inch barrel. Suits me fine. Has a good finish.

The LTR has the qualities of the Police with a lighter stock and is more useful for carrying.

The 5R has a reputation for being accurate and easier to clean (from what I've gathered, regarding the different rifling) and has a decent stock from the factory.

That being said, my needs are to shoot paper. I have access to 200 yards. That's where I do 95% of my shooting. I don't want to hunt, I just want a quality tack driver for the range. I currently have a lot of 223 ammunition already, and I have other rifles that shoot the caliber, so it lowers cost for me.

The one thing I have noticed is there are a lot of reviews praising the 700 5r in 308 - but not so many in the 223 class.

I'd love to hear from anyone with personal experience with the 223 in the 700 5r and how it performs for you, and what results are.

Again, thanks for all the help folks.

Got one in .223, .308 and just got one in .300WM (waiting for A5 stock to arrive). The .223 is pretty accurate. Will do .5 moa all day with 75gr Hornady BTHP reloads if I do my part. Its in a McMillan A5 (bedded) with a Trijicon TR23 5-20x50.

Let's just say I won't be selling this one anytime soon. Had it for a couple years now. This is it below:

Had one for a year, along with a 308. Was a great rifle, accurate and recoil was nice and low for those high round count trips to the range. Only reason I sold it was I have a custom 6mmBR and my range time was becoming limited so I focused on my custom builds when I did get out.

I've had both the .223 and .308, and they were both awesome shooters.
The .223 would shoot anything well at 100yrds, even AE FMJ, altough the consistancy was a little hit and miss. The difference between 69 gr FGM, reloads, or bulk ammo was 1/2 to 1" groups. I sold both to fund other projects, but now I have a bunch of stuff around to customize a Remmy, so more 5R's on the way

BigMotoFrog: I have the exact A5 been sitting under my bench for 2 yrs, that will get a .223 5R. How do you like the Trijicon?

I really like them. I have three of the TR23's. Some might not like the thicker reticle, and I think it is 50 moa adjustment. Not an issue with a 20moa rail though. Glass is really nice and clear.

OP, you'll do just fine with your new 5R. No worries about that. The stock is the same as the 700P model but with spider webbing instead of all black. I love the LTR stocks and I can tell you from owning (3) of them that they're ideally suited for 20" and shorter rifles. They rest very well off the bags too. The forearm isn't as long or as wide as the 700P stock and that's a good thing as it improves the handling noticeably.

IMHO, 20" barrel lengths are ideal for the shooting that most of us do. I wouldn't feel undergunned at all by your decision.
