Thanks for all the PM's and replies to my other threads guys. Much appreciated. I have managed to work a deal / trade for a NIB Remington 700 5R chambered in 223.
I have spent the last few days going over the merits of the:
1.) SPS TACTICAL in 223
2.) 700 Police in 223
3.) 700 LTR in 223
4.) 700 5R in 223
From what I gather, the SPS is a great value - but may have issues with the stock touching the barrel with bipod use. Remedied by a stock swap usually. Handy short heavy barrel is good for hunting / carrying.
The police has a decent stock, shoots well from the factory, but serves more as a bench platform due to its weight and 26 inch barrel. Suits me fine. Has a good finish.
The LTR has the qualities of the Police with a lighter stock and is more useful for carrying.
The 5R has a reputation for being accurate and easier to clean (from what I've gathered, regarding the different rifling) and has a decent stock from the factory.
That being said, my needs are to shoot paper. I have access to 200 yards. That's where I do 95% of my shooting. I don't want to hunt, I just want a quality tack driver for the range. I currently have a lot of 223 ammunition already, and I have other rifles that shoot the caliber, so it lowers cost for me.
The one thing I have noticed is there are a lot of reviews praising the 700 5r in 308 - but not so many in the 223 class.
I'd love to hear from anyone with personal experience with the 223 in the 700 5r and how it performs for you, and what results are.
Again, thanks for all the help folks.
