I used to remove them, but my guns were mainly range guns, so less likelihood of crap getting in them, especially spruce and pine needles which I used to see a ton of in customers guns in NS.
Yup, I've had a few apart, and most have pine needles wrapped around the bolt. This particular rifle is right around 45 years old, and has never been apartIf you have set the nut up so you can get it on and off for regular-ish cleaning I would agree. I used to have people bring in guns they hadnt cleaned in 20 years, and always had needles in them. Used to drive me nuts. You can do alot to make the 742 run better, and there are some tricks mentioned on line like how to tension the bolt head over rotation latch etc. I usually found just cleaning them was key.
