742 wrench

I used to remove them, but my guns were mainly range guns, so less likelihood of crap getting in them, especially spruce and pine needles which I used to see a ton of in customers guns in NS.
 
Use "Freeze-Off" on the nut. Its got red threadlock on it.
I use gentle heat first...then spray it with Freeze-Off. then remove the nut.
"Freeze-Out" works too.

I'm thinking it will be ok to leave it off. The gun belongs to an older fella that doesn't do much trekking through deep woods anymore. Pretty much walks from his truck to his tree stand through a small bunch of thigh high bushes.
 
If you have set the nut up so you can get it on and off for regular-ish cleaning I would agree. I used to have people bring in guns they hadnt cleaned in 20 years, and always had needles in them. Used to drive me nuts. You can do alot to make the 742 run better, and there are some tricks mentioned on line like how to tension the bolt head over rotation latch etc. I usually found just cleaning them was key.

Yup, I've had a few apart, and most have pine needles wrapped around the bolt. This particular rifle is right around 45 years old, and has never been apart
 
You should use the dust cover, especially if the rifle is going to be use for hunting.

In order to install it properly, your going to have to take out your cocking handle and pull the bolt and slide at least 3/4 the way out, so don't forget my warning about the religious parts.
