Hey all!!

Just got myself a 760 pump in 308. Right now it has a 22" barrel, but I plan to have a smith remedy that. It came with a weaver rail, which I remounted an blue-Lock-tighted the screws in place. I found some steel weaver rings, and for now, I have mounted a steel tube weaver K4-1 4x 32 scope I found here on the board. This arrangment clears the rear sight. I bet you can see the repeating theme here (as much steel as I can find LOL!!!). This is to be my rough and tumble carbine, and will transform it as money and time premit.

I called Remington, and from the serial number is was manufactured in the mid 80's.

The front sling swivel is barrel band, and not my favorite option. I was wondering if there are any other alternative.

There is something offered by uncle mikes that replace the fore-end bolt, but those seem to be for 760's mfg Pre-1968.

Further, I am looking for a good synthetic stock set, and a LH saftey. I know williams makes a LH saftey, but have not had much success with them.

Could you please point me in the correct direction.

regards

If it was made in the mid 80's its a 7600, not a 760. The 7600 was introduced in 1982. The 760 was made from 1952-1981.

For a good synthetic stock, get a B&C.

For the swivel, I believe the 7400 one will work, but I've never tried it. And the sling will slide with the forearm.

A BUTLER CREEK side folding stock for a REMINGTON 870 pump 12gauge fits with very little modification(the receiver is a little narrower). A top folding works also but your scope would be in the way. It makes for a nice short gun for on SKI DOO's or ATV's. goto www.uncle-mikes.com and do a search of UNCLE MIKE'S sling attachments .

Gentlemen:

Thank you ever so much, please keep the thoughts coming!!

Gunrunner100:

Thank you for the link. Hrm, based on some comments there, perhaps I will just work with the Barrel band for now.

blargon:

I will defer to your greater knowledge in this area, I was simply sharing what the nice lady told me.

I has the B-prefix to the serial number, which would lead me to blelive it a late model 760. Further more, I am quite certain its a 760 Gamemaster, as that is what it says on the gun :D

Regards and all the best

Geologist:

Thx for the kind words. She is coming along quite nicely, and is looking pretty good with The all steel rings and scope, against the stained wood.

The orriginal idea was to make a Black style pump gun on a budget, but this may turn out to be an "Old School carbine" build with parkerized-telflon coated metal, 18.5 inch barrel and retain the wood. I would really like to incorperate some ghost ring sights as a back up to the optics.

Right now Im flexible and I will see where this takes me.

Enjoy the project.:) I really prefer the wood on the 760 and the early 7600's rather than the synthetics.;)

I've got my Dad's old 'Gamemaster' 760- '06 that he bought new late 1950's ..... and she's still a deadly little shootin' iron - wouldn't change for nuttin!

Hey all!!

Overnight I have had a couple of promising developments regarding this project. I really like how that Weaver 4k-1 rides on top of the rifle and its ascetics. However I am not crazy about the very fine cross hairs. I have found out that it is possible to have them changed, and there are several options. As such I think the scope is going to be a keeper.

Further, I think I have run down some metal 10 round mags for this one as well. I have a little more research to do, but am looking forward to the process.

As promised , here are some photo’s. Let me know what you think.

Regards

Under the fore end on the action tube there should be a rubber "o" ring. Lots of them wear out and fall off. Pull the fore end off of the gun and see if it is still there. There will be a detent in the tube where it goes. Replace if needed and it will quiet the fore end rattle some what. If the gun isn't too rattlly it may still be there. I prefer the barrel band or the front swivel. The fore end screw type are always coming loose.

The O-ring is one of the first things to go. Darryl is right, replacing it will quieten down the forend rattle. As to the specific size, just go to your local machine shop and test a couple. Biggest problem is not diameter but ring thickness as the assembly diameters are quite close. Apply a little grease when putting the forend hanger into the pump assembly and it will stop the O-ring from ripping and coming out of the detent.

Darryl:

I will have a look. If its missing, do you know what size "o" ring I need or where I can get it ??

I just replaced a few O-rings, outside diameter is 0.57 and the thickness is .070. Not sure what # it is, but I bought them at the Home Hardware plumbing section.

Funny thing is the O rings on the 7600's were gone, but the 760 was still like new.

Save your time and money and get one in .35Whelen. Cheaper to get and ammo is factory available.

where are you going to find one in 35 whelan? Grices might have a few but good luck in getting it to canada.
I contacted remington about if they will be offering the carbine synthetic in any other calibers such as 338 fed,338-06 or 35 whelan and hopefully i should hear back next week . I am assuming that there are no such plans but i can dream . If they at least had the whelan barrel available that would be a start.
there is a company by the name of "accuracy int" i think that sells 7600 barrels of differnt contours and both factory and wildcat chamberings.

I didn't realize that they weren't offering the Whelen as an option any longer. When I was in the market in '92, I was going to buy a .30-06 and rebarrel it to either 8mm-06 or .338-06 and someone at the gunshop suggested the Whelen. I haven't looked back since. That would be my first choice to find a Whelen, but I now realize that it may be easier said than done.
