I just dont get the advertised velocities from the reloading data. I sneak up on a maximum load per the data but it is still considerably slower in FPS. Reloader7 has been the powder. The bullet is a Hornady 123 grn sp with a cannelure. I was using 26 grains of R7 and the velocity was less than 2200 fps @10 ft from muzzle. Has anybody got some proven reload data out there? Somebody must have a special recipe they have found....yes i have the data from 303british.kom, i bought his book. I was using Winchester and some S&B brass. Next I want to try Lapua brass I bought some from Prophet River the other day. FWIW, Igman brass is KRAPPE! Lapua is the best i have found. Anybody use the Remington brass with the small rifle primer pocket?

I use winchester brass and 32g of H335. The velocity is low, and my bullet is the hornady 123g sp.

This load makes raggy holes at 25 & 50 yards. At 100y I'm able to make 3-4 inch groups on average, and at 200y I can consistently hit an 8x8 inch steel plate. This is all out of an 858. It stopped having feed issues once I ran 600 rounds of surplus through it.

I hunt with the MFS soft point ammo, simply because it's really hot and I hate losing brass in the woods.

I tried Sierra .311 150gr SP and 21gr of H4198 .Only made up 4 and at 75 yards all bullets were touching with open sights.............should be OK for deer.......very accurate .......With 123gr I use 24gr of win 748...........Harold

RL-7 is #####in in this little cartridge. I won't t share my specific load as it's well over maximum (but, I'm shooting this cartridge in a bolt-action gun, designed for much more intense cartridges. Plus, my velocities are well within the norms).

Was that from an SKS?

I have the CZ carbine that I put a 3-9 scope on. I have used Re7 and got 1 great group with the 123gr hornady bullets with Win brass. I have shot some of the S&B 123gr factory ammo and mine loading guru seems to think that it is excellent brass. P&D was selling the loaded ammo for $19.00 per box of 20 rounds.
Not sure that I would spend a bunch of dough for Lapua brass for this caliber.FS

It's worse for brass out of an SKS as ejection is up and 15 ft foreward of the shooter! At the range I use a lrg cardboard box with a hole cut out in the middle to shoot through.Sandbags in the box so it stays put.Brass hits the inside of the box and falls on the bench.............Harold

I go to a lot of trouble for hunting rounds for my SKS's.
I pull the bullets of surplus, dump out the powder, 29.4gns of WC735 throws a 150gn Sierra GameKing downrange at an avg of just over 2100fps. I get a 2" group at 100yds from 2 of my SKS's, a 3" group from the other two.
I shoot the same round (loaded in brass) from my Remington 799 and I get almost MOA at 100, but it throws it to a 3" group at 200yds.
And, yes, OP, I do use some of the Remington brass with the small primer pocket. I only use it for reduced velocity rounds 9-11gns Unique and a 220gn .308RN bullet (although I am out of Unique and now have to work up a new load on 700X).

Pet Loads

Nice to see the input. My reloads are used in a Model1 762x39 AR upper. One good thing is that my brass remains undamaged and ejects just to the right of me. My SKS spits it out kind of rough so no Lapua brass for it :p
Don't know why the one fellow was keeping his load data private, that's the point of the thread. "Pet Loads"
That WC735 load sounds promising and 748, I'll give it a try.

If a guy says that his load is well over book max,he has worked it up to that point. What can happen is that a young not so patient fellow can go right to that load data and blow up his rifle and that is why many experienced loaders don't share their best loads. FS

Or at least warn folks not to start at that level. A mentor saves a lot of headaches during the reloading learning curve. When I first started I had dies, manual,a press and a scale.I used a teaspoon and a cereal bowl for powder. It took forever to load 20 rds but they shot as accurate as my current setup.A powder trickler is a lot easier on the back....30 some odd years ago.....kids! If you have any loads that work and you want to share them with readers that is the purpose of this thread. I'm looking for loads, not instructions on loading safety.FYI, I have been reloading for over 40 years. No prudent reloader would just duplicate anybody's supposed load and see if it works. From the info gleamed from others and their data a reloader just has more info to go on, in search of the load that works for him, in his firearm on that day. I get so tired of load data marked 'experimental, do not use' somebody used it, it worked for them, maybe a slight reduction would be a good place to start. Its all just knowledge, share it and learn more. Everyone is not a newbie, but they were one once.

Here is my fun subsonic load that is quiet, accurate, has about the same energy as a .38 special, but sounds like a .22 subsonic. Great for grouse and rabbits at typical small game range. Low pressure and safe load.

#3 Subsonic Load (760 fps, very quiet)
Primer: CCI # 250
Powder: Trail Boss 7.0gr
Bullet: Winchester bulk 180gr or other 180gr
Brass: Winchester

This is fired from an SKS. Will not cycle SKS action.

I did some farting around with 165gr RN loads, but lost my data sheet for that load. It did cycle the action and the 165gr RN's bullets fed just fine. I bet if someone experimented with 165 gr RN bullets and nice small ball powder, they could get a real good close range thumper for the SKS.

The standard 123 gr bullet is fine for the 7.62x39, but you do not NEED to stop there. My Hornady manual has several of loads for 150-155gr bullets doing 2200 fps BTW, and that's as "lawyerized" a reloading manual as I've ever seen.

I use to use 4.5gn Unique behind a 220gn sierra RN bullet.

I follow the Cast Bullets For Military Surplus Rifles article and use 15 grains of 2400 under a GC ww cast 155gr Lee Spitzer tipped bullet. I am not a hunter, but it is a great plinking load out to 150 yards and it cycles my sks.

For reduced loads I use 8 grains of 2400 in my bolt gun with the same bullet or .312 round ball out to 50 to 80 yards. Nice light plinker, it's about the same as a .357 mag load fired in a rifle. I use these loads in X39 and .303 Brit fun loads you can shoot all day.

Keep those pet loads coming

All good info. The subsonic rounds sound great. None of the loads so far are anything wild. I would be hesitant to go much over the stock bullet weight with any of the standard velocity loads. Nice to see that it is doable though. I want the action of the semi to cycle. Most of my good reloads will be fodder for an AR. The SKS gets the Czech. S&B? surplus. My bullets on the Czech surplus mic to 0.3085, how does that compare to yours? I have noticed a huge difference in bullet dia's from manufacturer to manufacturer. That seems to be why reloading info is always stressing the internal volume differences, as pressure would be different even more so with larger dia. bullets. Keep those pet loads coming :sniper:
