7mm 08 for Moose.

Taking my wife on her first moose hunt, she uses a Ruger American youth rifle in 7mm 08, 139 gr Hornady interlock.

Looking for info on max range for an effective behind the shoulder shot.....200 Yardsish ????

Any info/experience appreciated.

It’s certainly capable, they use ‘em for elk. I’d pick a better bullet however, as interlocks tend to come apart. A Partition, Accubond, TTSX, or Tropy Bonded Tip will be your huckleberry.
 
My little Husqvarna 7X57 Featherweights teamed up with 140gr Partitions at 2800 fps were always more than enough. No doubt your sweetheart’s 7mm-08 will do just as well.

My beige shot a young bull at 300ish yards with her 7mm-08 shooting 120 TTSX. It wasn’t a bang flop, but it don’t go far after a follow up shot. She hit it well. Right behind the shoulder.
 
IF she can place the bullet accurately within 4" of her point of aim, that load will work on moose out to 300 yards just fine.
The key here will be her proficiency and comfort/confidence level of being able to place that bullet accurately from field positions as compared to target practice at the range. Let her tell you what her comfort level is and what distancet she is confident she can shoot from field positions is.
A moose is a big target. A good double lung shot and it will not go far and expire quickly.
(My wife confidently was able to repeatedly hit the gongs out to 400 yards at the range from the bench, but was dismayed yesterday when she cleanly missed a nice black bear off the shooting sticks at 138 yards. She took her arapawa rams in May from 122 and 124 yards off the same shooting sticks.)

The Interlock bullet is a decent bullet and many believed that isn't sufficient for most big game, and while it may not have the same integrity as a bonded or mono bullet, will perform just fine for adequate expansion and weight penetration for reliable kills on big game. Just don't expect it to stand up to very heavy bone like a bonded or mono bullet. They have been successfully taking game for decades.

Not to hijack but heres a 150 partition out of a 7-08 that went bow to stern on a calf moose at 285 yd.

One of my favourite chambers.

Can't think of any reason why that wouldn't work just fine. You could push it past 200 yards too, though you shouldn't have to for moose.
 
I have not shot any game with the 7mm-08, but have taken many animals with its
ballistic twin, the 7x57. at least 8 moose, from 40 yards out to 350, never had any
issues. Mostly used the 140 or 150 Partitions. Quite effective. Dave.

No Bull moose for us, seen a couple of cows and a caribou. Great trip, way to warm 23 plus everyday. Thx

Hell to the naw. That bullet is garbage. I might, if I had no other choice, use them on a whitetail, but they're about my 43rd choice of 7mm bullet. 140gr Partition would be my first choice. TSX would be OK though I haven't fooled with them much in short cases due to their length.

Maybe someone has some of the old Failsafes lying around. They were just about the greatest bullet ever designed for the middle calibers but they went the way of the dodo.
