7mm-08 loads

Well back from the range, nothing overly impressive but all groups under 1.5". 42 gr of varget, 46gr H414 and 46.5 gr imr 4350 were the best. Rifle would usually put two touching eachother and then open up from there, didn't think the barrel was too hot.

Anyone else have some more advice for 140gr accubonds?

I loaded 3 of them up with 45.5gr RL17, they made a .4" group, but velocities were down around 2725 fps. I think I have a slow barrel, as I can't push 120's past 3000fps with 44.5gr of varget, either. Rem 700 sps 24" barrel.

also tried 3 with 46gr rl17 gave 2775 fps but my primers were flattening (brand new brass, however, could be part of the reason), and the group opened way up.

I really wish my velocities were another 50-75fps higher, although in reality it doesn't make that much difference.

I'm using 140 gr Berger bullets behind 40gr of H4895 in a 1 in 11"barrel. I put in a longer magazine from Wyatt's Outdoor inc so they would fit in the magazine and still be .01 off the lands.

I have a Rem 700 LVSF in 7mm-08. My gunsmith buddy bedded it and did the trigger (about 2#) while I was away one summer and then started loading for it . He tried a number of differant recipes and the best group he could get was .421. When I came home I bought a box of federal premium 140 with the TSX and after 2 sighters got a .283 3 shot group and a .385 5 shot group. Been shooting factories eversince. It is my hunting gun though

sounds like I will have to do a bit more work. Would like to try some r17 too. Sometimes you can't beat the factory ammo but being a reloader I can't admidt that! Will do some more work and see what happens. Some loads are showing a bit of promise and might need some fine tuning.

Well managed to find a good grouping load for the 7-08 mountain rifle. 42.5 gr of varget with a 140 gr nosler accubond shot well with 5 shots producing a group under 1". Was hoping I could fit a little more varget into the case, havent chronographed these loads yet but shoult be in the 2700 - 2800 fps mark. Going to keep trying out a few different combinations.

Anyone else have some pet loads?

46 grains or Varget with a 120 grain? Aren't you seeing any pressure signs? IIRC I didn't think you could fit 46 grains of Varget in the 7mm-08 case... Although I haven't loaded for that rifle in a long while...

Tough to beat Rl15 in the 7mm-08. My M70 classic featherweight was pretty mediocre with most bullet weights until I tried RL15- not .75 moa is to be expected. I especially like it with 120 TSX. About to star work on an original Rem 700 Ti in 7mm-08, and 120 TTSX and RL15 are at the top of my list.

I use 46,5gr of 47SL-10 surplus powder in my 7-08 LH Ruger and 11" twist 21-1/4" long Sako barrel. OAL is 2,860" with 140gr Barnes X bullet. This set up gives me solid 2800 FPS or so and just under 1-1/4" 3 shot group at 100m with 4x Burris mini scope. No compaints. Rem 150grCL (I have lots of them) are more accurate but Barnes has better terminal performance-killed 4point mule deer at 125m or so a week ago, the bullet traveled whole lenght of deer, breacking pelvis exited and hit large boulder. In the spring the same combo killed large black bear and that time I recovered the bullet, perfect performance and 100% weight retention.

I can't wait to get my room finished and get back to reloading, it's been way too long and my model seven in 7mm-08 is itching to have a load developed for it...

I like to load a bit hotter than Roman by about 2 grains. That is is with either H414SL10 (most constent surplus powder ever made available, right along with 4831) or W760.

I use the Hornady 140gn, SST Interlock for terminal performance.

Every rifle is an entity unto itself. Roman's load, along with mine is with a powder that isn't commonly available anymore. H414SL10, is slightly slower than W760/H414. It was offered by Higginson's. It is a commercial factory powder that was developed for consistencey and was one of the early extreme range powders that showed a lot of promise. To my knowledge, none of the commercial loaders use it anymore as there are other powders available that equal it and cover a wider range of cartridges.

W760 or H414 along with Rx19 or one of the 4350 powders is a very good choice. I like to use magnum primers with ball powders.

I won't tell you not to go lighter than 140 gn bullets but if you want an accurate bullet that will be adequate for everything from bears to elk and moose, without having to resight your rifle between weight changes, it's just about the most versatile bullet weight available.

Each rifle is an entity unto itself. What may be considered a max load in one rifle is just fine in another. Same goes for accuracy.

The thing about 7mms, is that they seem to like slower powders at just about any reasonable velocity, until you get into the magnums. Then they get fussier and want to loaded near max.

The 7-08 is a great all around cartridge. It is on par with the 308Win, 7.65Mauser, 303Brit, 30-06 etc, when they are loaded to similar pressures and bullet weights with similar ballistic coefficients.

Whichever load you decide on, use some discretion and fine tune it to your rifle. Just try to keep things in perspective though. A few tenths of a grain one way or the other in a case loaded for a hunting rifle won't make any noticeable difference in accuracy anywhere, other than your own mind. Unless you are loading a match grade chamber, using off the shelf hunting bullets, groups that measure anywhere under 1 1/2 inches, are fine for shots out to 400 yards. Very few people get a chance to shoot at an animal that far away or think it's a lot further than that.

As usually your posts Gerard are very informative. Yes, that powder when used with CCI250 magnum primers is giving me only max 15FPS velocity spread. Still having 4-1/2LB left of it. Tried it with up to 47,5 gr charge but it wasn't to accurate and was giving me signs of high pressure in hot weather in my necked down 308Win Lapua brass. Mind you old Barnes X bullets are known for early pressure spikes compared to regular ones. Are you comming to Salmon Arm gun show next weekend?
