7mm-08 Powder?

W-760 is great in this cartridge, 2900 is pretty easy to work up to in a 20" barrel with the 140gr bullets. Give it try...if you can find any!

I have had 3 7mm 08 's - 2900 fps with a 20 " tube and 140 's ? YOU CAN ONLY WISH imo ! none of mine ever shot that fast with normal pressure - did you actually chrono the load or is it BOOK velocity ? Just wondering ! ;) RJ

Agreed. I have never achieved those velocities out of a short tube, in fact I've never managed to get 2900 fps out of my 22 inch tube. And that's true chronographed velocities not book values.

You have a special sort of rifle to get 2900 fps in a 20 inch tube.

As tested in a Ruger No.1, H&R Handi Rifle and a Ruger M77 Frontier.

My wife shoots a Browning Micro Midas in 7-08. 145 gr Barnes LRX, 38.5 of IMR 4895. Chrono's around 2490 fps.
Groups she was getting were mighty impressive ---- enough so that we quit experimenting and put that one in the book as her working load.

You can load most 7-08's to get some fairly speedy results, however, I have found that accuracy almost always falls into a certain speed for certain weight bullets in 7-08.

Always seems to be best with 140's at 2850-2880 ft / sec, don't ask me why , it don't make sense but for a few different barrels for me this has been the case.

150's around 2750 ish.

I have pushed 140's up to 3000+ ft, with no pressure signs but falling off in accuracy.

My finnlight got 2890 fps in a 20" with big game powder when it was 18 degrees out and then when temp dropped I couldn't get above 2780 which is why I quit using big game powder.

I did up some loads using:

Browning Micro Hunter 7mm-08 20" barrel

Nosler Brass
Fed LR Match primer
Nosler Accubond 140gr
2.885 OAL
Ramshot Big Game

Did a 15 round ladder test @ 100 yards(12 year old doing the shooting).

Charge started @ 43.5 and went up to 47.5

barrel was cooled down between each shot.

Velocity ranged from 2550 up to 2735.

There were 3 accuracy nodes but all rounds went into about a 2.5 inch circle...about 6 made one ragged hole.

Was a little disappointed in the the velocity at top end because Nosler Manual topped out at over 2900 but they were using 26 inch barrel.

First time using Ramshot rifle powders but have to say I am VERY impressed.

Overall VERY impressed with this rifle and how my kid shoots it...he actually shoots it better than I can because I am used to heavier rifles??

This is also my first 7mm-08 and VERY impressed with the efficiency of this round....might have to pick one up for myself in a 26 inch barrel.

Most powders are going to show some fps loss when you go from 20 deg. temps in summer to Winter or even Fall.

Hodgdon's Extreme line has proved to be the least sensitive for me.

I hope your wrong about Big Game but I will have to see how it works.
