7-08 for your Wife as first choice - 120 gr TTSX - RJ
No "humble opinion" about it, there WILL be a lot of muzzle blast either way. OP needs to reconsider and go with a 22" rifle. This will give him/her some more weight, better handling and less noise.
I agree, but limited in rifle selection and calibre for a compact rifle with 12.5 LOP. I wish the Ruger American Compact had a 20" barrel that would be perfect. Would be nice to shop a regular Ruger American and have the option of buying a compact stock for it, that would open up more options.

Reloader 17 and Lapua brass really makes the 7mm-08 come alive.

The short pull Ruger American compact is the only rifle that fits her well so stuck with the 18 inch barrel and 6lb weight
Really not sure why this one hasn't sold.
Better awpshun than the 'merickan…………..me thinks.

The Browning X bolt Micro Midas is a better choice, it has a 20" barrel as well as an adjustable LOP with the butt spacers added in.
It would be nice of Cabelas had one for her to shoulder and try, at the end of the day she likes the Ruger Compact best after trying the Remington, Mossberg and Savage.
After all the great feedback we have settled on the 7mm 08.
Best round for a 1 in 9-1/2" 18" barrel?

Just got the gun home scope mounted, 6.85 pounds all in mag full. Gonna sight in after this snow storm passes. Not much in bullet selection at Cabelas , settled on 139grain Hornady interlock American Whitetails 2840 FPS
I've never heard of 7mm-08

Have had both -- prefer the 7mm-08 shoots flatter and hits harder downrange than 308. you can get heavier bullets in 308 but found I didn't need them for deer & moose in my neck of the woods. Shot my biggest moose ever (1165 lbs) with a 7mm-08 Federal Premium 140grn Nosler partition --- 1 shot.
