I like bigger, heavier bullets. And don't you use a .45-70? More like Elmer Kieth than Jack O'Connor!

Me too, but I'm not a rookie, and they're not being shot out of a pipe attached to some cheap tupperware :D

Just always wary when newish folks decide to buy a magnum, when it's not needed :p

me, I just subscibe to bullet diameter over bullet speed theorys :D

I voted .300 Win Mag. I've owned two... a Ruger 77 'tangsafety' and a Browning A-bolt composite stalker. Still have the Browning. [Like those 180 gr's going out at 3,000 fps] And have shot moose with it. With a 26" barrel, shoots like a dream, way more accurate than I could ever 'hold'...

I've shot the 7mm Rem Mag but never cared to own one since my Browning in .300 Win Mag would make one redundant...

That all said... if I was going with a light rifle like the Stevens 200 as a FIRST TIME purchase of a rifle in a MAGNUM ctg. I might just opt for the 7mm... 'Course, owning the Browning I've been thinking about a Stevens myself... but mine will be in 7mm-08 or .270... ;)

I picked the 300 Win Mag, bigger is better.

that being said, there is no moose made yet that can shrug off a solid hit from a 7mm Rem Mag with a good bullet.

I picked the 7mm, I have one and have used it on a few moose over the years and I have not found a moose that the 7mm with a 175grn bullet would not kill. The 7mm is also flatter shooting and works good on deer.

Would I buy a 300mag, in a heart beat (if the wife would let me, or I found a way to sneek it into the house) Why because I like to have options.

I think I need a 30-06 and a 300mag, why because they are different and I don't have one yet.

My first rifle that I bought myself was a savage bolt in 300 wim mag.
Though the gun shot better than I could at the time, it did make it very well known that yu were shooting a light rifle. So I tinkered around and added a bit of lead to the stock, and made it more manageable.
But in shooting this rifle for a while, I developed a flinch.
Now I'll say this very clearly.
"If I had to do it all over again, I would have went for a 308, or 30-06 in the same gun".
Flinching is an easy habit to pick up, and a hard one to break.
I have to side with Anphib on this one. Why punish yourself needlessly. Trust me, I like to shoot, but after a box of 300 win mag shells out of that savage/stevens, your shoulder will be numb, and bruised.
Now Im a big guy, and since have learned to shoot through recoil by shooting alot. And shooting a 300 WM in a 7.5 lb scoped rifle (or 7mm mag) isnt fun for a goodrange session.
Range sessions should be fun, and they are an Integral part of being a successful hunter or shooter.
I also owned a ruger #1 in 7mm mag. It was much softer on the shoulder, but still not a good first caliber.
Personally my opinion would be towards a 06, 270, or 280.
But Opinions are like #######s, everyone has one. :p:

I worked up a load for my 30-06 Stevens the other day. Recoil was fine, for me..

But I've shot plenty of big magnums, and I shoot afair bit.

I also only shot 12 rounds to work up the load and zero it. I could clearly tell the difference between the30-06 and 223...:D

If the rifle is a first rifle, i'd stay away form the 300's....:)

I've had several of each. Including STWs and shot game with both calibers, 7mms are good but I definatly notice a difference in hitting power. 200 Noslers out of a 300 are in a different class. At least for moose.

I guess it boils down to the distance you will be shooting. I get right up on moose so flat shooting is a no start in calibre choice. A savage weather warrior kicking out a hot load 180 gr hits you hard enough that you notice, and so would the moose. In magnum I think you'd need a good jacket.
P.S. if it can't be killed with an '06 I don't want to share the woods with it.

I've had two 7mm's a 30 06, .35 whelen and still have a .280 I am leaning towards the .300 I wouldn't use it a lot that's why I was thinking on the stevens (for the price it's tough to beat) One spot I found this year Moose hunting that I would love to hunt again next year a 400 yd. shot is possible. I didn't think the .280 would be capable of this. Most of the spots up there wouldn't exceed a 200 or so yard shot. I wouldn't hesitate in using the .280 for that (provided I don't sell or trade it before then) Thanks for all your advice fellas.

Dave.

properly loaded, with a good shooter, the 280 Remington is a 400 yard moose gun

on the other hand, a guy needs a good excuse to buy a new rifle :D

Are you a reloader Dave?
I have never been a 7mm fan and the 300 is lots of fun to reload for.
300WM for moose.

Not reloading at the moment I'm going to get back at it with monty! I've never owned a 300. I've had two 7 mm's and own a .280 now. I know on paper a .280 will complete 300 plus yd shots. I'm confident I can make those shot's. But I just don't feel that my .280 (in my gut) will have the same effectivness a .300 can sounds weird to most I know. If I can't feel confident. I can't be satisfied! Why aren't a fan of 7mm's bigredd?

Dave.

Well that is a good question... case capacity... bullet selection... bullet weights... long range ability... any or all of the above.
Plus I am a .270 fan... and a .300 fan.

Not trying to stir the pot BUT

Red, this isn't making sense to me.

You are a 270 and 300 fan, but you're not a 7mm fan.

Do you have a good reason for this or are you just digging your heels in on this whole metric thing????

Not at all... I have used the .270 for years because of caliber restrictions in many of the areas where I hunt wolves/coyotes. And the 300WM is my first choice for a Moose rifle. The 7mm's will not outperform either of these calibers in any situation so it becomes redundant... for me!
besides senior likes .280's... and I must challenge him at every opportunity;)
I do think the 7mmWSM is awesome though!

A 7mm WSM is a short action .280 Rem, so basically you are saying you like a "short" version of Senior!

A 7mmRM will launch a 175gr as fast, or faster than the .270 a 150gr. That has got to be worth something a big critters. Have we had a .270 vs. 7mm RM poll yet?:D
