7mm vs 280

I think the initial question is, why are some buying .280s and the more expensive .280 Ai, to speed things up a bit, when they can buy one of the 7mm mags. I'm neutral in this as I don't care for these cals. for hunting big game. In some cals. the move to shorter, fatter brass may have some merit from an accuracy potential standpoint, but that's not in play here.

This is what I was thinking, why bother with .280's and .284 WCF's to squeek out every last drop of velocity when you can just go and buy/build a RUM or STW :D.

**Disclaimer I am not a speed freak nor do I endorse the ego stroking that entails in the realm of the magnum 7's and 30's.**

why have a 284,280ai and rem7 mag at the same time. cause i like sevens more is better. will soon have another 7stw and 708ai too.

speed

Some of us are built for comfort not for speed.gotta lov dat speed.it isn't all or nuttun though and there may be some recoil limits for some folks. Do the RUMS bite?BBmessageQUOTE=archie_james_c;3400825]This is what I was thinking, why bother with .280's and .284 WCF's to squeek out every last drop of velocity when you can just go and buy/build a RUM or STW :D.

Why bother with a 308win or 30-06 when you can have a 30-378?

Thats basically the point of these threads :D.

If you want a comfortable shooting cartridge than use a non-magnum, if you want a #### hot lightning bolt then go with a magnum.

Why dabble and bicker trying to get magnum performance from non-magnum cartridges?

Cause, I can put 5 AI's in the belly of my Model 70 and only 3 magnums in the mag, and the stack angle in the non magnum is better facilitating better feeding. For starters.

Well I figure you fruit cakes are gonna bicker...so we might as well stoke up the fire.

Ya, but this fruit cake contains nuts, bi@tch:D

I agree. I love my .284 because it is mild kicking and I can reach the 3000fps mark with 55grs of powder and little recoil. Comfortable and efficient. But I do like looking at the drop chart of the STW with a 160 Accubond. I'll appreciate any cartridge for it's history, it's efficiency, or it's hod-rod cool factor. But a .280 is a .280 and the 7mm Mags and "super" mags are what they are too.
Now what was the 7mm based off of a necked down .50 Browning called again?:onCrack:
The one thing I will say about the .280AI is, when you compare what a handloader can do with this cartridge, it is the equivalent of the mediocre 7mm Rem Mag loadings out there (ie. 140gr bullets at 3150-3200fps.), When you handload the 7mm Rem Mag, there is no comparison.

Buy a 280. Whatever you shoot will never know the difference. Lighter gun, less powder, less recoil, less blast and only marginally less velocity and usually one more in the magazine. A very balanced cartridge.

exactly why people shoud buy a 308 over a 30-06...or a 358 over a 35 Whelen...or a 7-08 over a 280...where does it end?...pretty soon we'll be hunting with the 7 TCU.......or a 30 Carbine....

it ends with something based on the 308 case. If you need more reach past 300y, pick something on the '06 case. If you need to stretch it to 400y, a belted mag or WSM. 500+, STW, RUM begin to shine

I bet a 7TCU would rock deer inside 200y :) however, a 30 carbine is just an imp cartridge.......

The way I see it, if you are set on a 7mm cartridge with around the power of a 280, 280AI or a 7RM then why not buy a 7WSM. Factory 7WSM loads will shoot close to tweaked out 7RM handloads and you don't have to spend alot of time trying to find the magic load or, in the case of the AI, blow out cases - no fuss no muss.

probably because I can count on one hand the amount of 7WSM rifles currently offered

The same goes for .280's (i can think of 4 off the top of my head, there is probably more) and .280AI's. You do it on your own justification and wants at the time. I have rifles in my past that I wonder at why I ever sold or bought them.

At the present time I am gathering compnents for a custom 7mm. Rem 700 action. Hs precision stock. Shilen trigger. Guilaard barrel I'm thinking 7mm rem mag but am having a time deciding
Why would someone buy a 280 when they could have a 7mm. I don't see recoil as a problem.bb message
