Well here's the deal,
I need another rifle, like I need a hole in the head, but I'm getting the itch to get something different.
I like the WSM cartridges, and have a 300 WSM now, which I can't see myself parting with.
I like 7mm stuff, and am thinking of getting a 7WSM, which would very likely be a rebarreled Sako.

Share some Pro's and Con's of the 7 WSM, leaving out that fact that factory ammo is hard to find. I reload, and never shoot factory ammo, so I can roll my own 7 WSM without a problem.

Con is that you can't fit long high BC bullets in the mags of many of them....if you are interested in shooting that is.

INTERESTING SUBJECT the 7 Wsm, seems to be a Canadian caliber in the sense the Americans prefer the 270 WSM something about meterics they don't like.
The 7 WSM offers a great selection of bullet weights and velocity is right up there with the 7 RM. Sooooo what's not to like. I have a model 7 in the 7 saum shorter yet but great caliber.

They will shoot, not sure why but they do.

Not a thing wrong with em, go light or go heavy, would actually be a versatile with a couple different loads.

I have a BLR in the 7WSM, I wanna go hunt I grab that first , reliable and accurate.

I load 150 Scirocco's in mine for an all round load.

Most prefer the 270 WSM as it actually has a performance advantage over the 270 Win., something the 7mm WSM doesn't have over the very common and popular 7mmRem Mag.

Then why is the 300 WSM so popular?
Ballistically the 300WM is better especially with heavier bullets.
With the popularity of the 7mm and the love for short action rifles, makes no sence why the 7 WSM isnt as popular as it should be

308 caliber rifles have always been the most popular, hence the attraction to a short action 308 magnum.
The 7WSM isn't popular as it offers no advantage over the 7RM and many will choose the 270 WSM over it.
The "Canadian" attraction to the 7mm WSM is here on CGN perhaps, certainly not Canada wide and it seems some target shooters have found a liking in it but I see far more rifles and ammo in stores marked 270 WSM.
The 270 will always be the more popular and I don't think it has much to do with it being "non metric", otherwise the 7RM should've been a flop stateside. My thoughts anyhow.

Personally, I'm not a fan of any short mags, but if it means more people will buy guns, then that's certainly fine by me.

I had one a few years ago and reloaded for it. I have since gone to a 7mm-08. I found the recoil manageable-more of a very sharp crack. I loaded a light load for 140 gr bullets at 280 rem velocity as I only used it for deer. The 7wsm has a very short neck and I had to cut 1/8" off my powder funnel. It was accurate in my Model 70 featherweight.

Want to give you trouble to feed it ?

Go big or go home.

Chamber your barrel in 7.21 Fireball Lazzeronni.

The ultimate 7mm.

LOL,
I have a 7mm STW for shock and awe factor. I am seriously considering selling it though. Doesn't get used enough, which is a shame as it was my first custom build.
If I sell it, I would be leaning towards a 7 WSM build, that's the reason for posting, just wanted to gather some opinions.
I have tons of 7mm bullets, and like the ballistics of 7mm stuff, so the 7 WSM seems like a good cartridge for me.

I have always thought the 7mm WSM SHOULD be the most popular of the bunch, regardless of actual or lack of improvement over the 7mm Rem Mag. A 7mm in a short action with that level of performance is nothing to sneeze at, the 160s cruising at 2900 + is a hammer on game and will cruise out to 1K no problem for those that like to lay on their bellies and pound steel or paper. I shoot a 284 winchester, but that is because the smith had a great working reamer on hand in that cartridge and it worked out well. Someday though, I would love a hunting rifle in 7WSM, a Ruger Hawkeye would be nice, or a Sako 85.

Just got my 7wsm donne and now waiting to save enough up to buy a decent scope for it.
Really looking foreward to pllaying wiith it next spring at some longer ranges,,Hopefully over a 1000yards,

I agree, 7mm bullets are hard to beat when you consider high BC's and the recoil factor. My 7 wsm is my most accurate rifle, and its a light weight. I also have a 284 win and a 7-08. The 7mm is the best of the short mags IMHO.

My nephew has one in a Browning bolt. I load for him, accurate little rifle. Very close to 7mm Rem ballistics so there is nothing wrong there. He is already having trouble finding brass and ammo. Told him we may have to start using 300 WSM brass . His plan for now is to start stocking up on brass. That will likely be a concern

I always figured the short mags would become orphans so don't buy one right? Yeah so dumb me fell in love with a gun and bought it, turns out it was the loneliest of all the short mags a 325wsm
