7mm WSM, Who's shooting one? Update Post 47, Build complete

Just built a 7mm saum and love it! Also have a 270wsm that hasnt been used since I got the 7. I think the 7 is the best of the wsm's. I say go for it!

Share some Pro's and Con's of the 7 WSM, leaving out that fact that factory ammo is hard to find. I reload, and never shoot factory ammo, so I can roll my own 7 WSM without a problem.

CON - Winchester rarely does a run of 7 WSM brass anymore. Very hard to find in Canada.
PRO- Great caliber. I have a Rem 700 SA, with a Broughton 5C 1 in 9 twist. Finished to 26". The 2nd most accurate and fun to shoot rifle that I have.

Now, I hate to hijack or change the focus on the 7 WSM but I have to make a suggestion. If you are looking for a light weight hunting rifle in a "something new" caliber... Rebarrel the Sako to a 6.5 SAUM. Better than the 7.

7mmwsm Rem 700

Sold my Rem 700 made by Hart rifles 24" 1/9,fluted, Mc Millan stock, jewel HVT trigger, Hart rings ultr light, Leupold 2.5 to 10x LPS all in weight 6lbs and a bit.
found a load with 140gr accubonds and H4831 sc 3170 fps and Magpro at 3300 fps extremely accurate rifle.
I have owned many custom rifles over the years but this one the best. some lucky CGN member enjoys it now.
I kick my butt for ever selling this one.

270 wsm and 300 wsm very abundant

I see the 270 WSM used by some hunters out west: primarily non-reloaders. It's too bad that the 7mm WSM didn't catch on as well as the 270 WSM, but you could say the same thing about 280 vs 270 as well.

Lots of popular 7mm calibers out there; 7mm-08, 7x57,7mm RM and recently the 280 AI, 280 and 284. In 270, there's really only the 270 Win that was popular, and to a much lesser extent the 270 Wby. Now there's the 270 WSM which falls in between the two in performance.

Have a Kimber 8400 in 7wsm and love it. great handing and shooting rifle. 160 speers easily to 3100 and very accurate with RL-17, 760, H100V and many others. also 145 speers at 3200 shoot great as well. Love the caliber as well and too bad it never caught on.

Well, I'm interested. There's hasn't been any solid cons to the 7 WSM out of this thread.
I will rebarrel one on a sako WSM action. I've always wanted a Greywolf, so I think that will be the plan. Just need to sell one to fund the build then I will start.
I will keep the barrel relatively light, similar to a factory barrel, and possible flute it. 24" in 1-9 twist.
Anyone know if it's easier to form brass from 270 or 300 WSM brass?

Never did read the rest of this thread. Wasn't sure if you were into necking up or down brass. In that case, brass supply is not an issue. Also, there is better options out there other than just Winchester brand brass.

I have a Remington 700 Stainless synthetic in 7mm SAUM. Even though I am not a rabid fan of any short mag, I DO like this combination.

Very accurate with most bullets I have tried in it, and surprisingly good velocities for that stubby case.

The 7WSM probably deserves to be more popular, but the 270 and 300 WSM's have that contest wrapped up.

Regards, Dave.

What brass do you recommend? I picked up a Sako 75 Greywolf in 300 WSM. That will be my base for the build. I'm thinking 25" barrel, Krieger 1-9 twist.

Con is that you can't fit long high BC bullets in the mags of many of them....if you are interested in shooting that is.

180gr Berger Hybrid @ 2.86" OAL, can still get enough 4831 under it to hit over 2800 fps. Only takes 24moa to hit 1000y...seems to do ok for a 'short mag'

I just found the one I was looking for, a M70 classic Stainless ultimate shadow...I find this the most comfortable rifle I have ever handled..lots of brass, bullets and powder ready to start load development as soon as spring comes back...hoping for 150 gr Nosler solid base boat tails to group well. I have a 270 WSM as well, either will do the job but I just like the seven...

I guess whatever you can find nowadays. Norma or Remington brass.

That will be a fine rifle for sure.

I've had a Stainless Savage in 7mm WSM for about ten years now, and it's a great calibre. Too bad it didn't catch on as well as some others. I ususally load 140 grain bullets, as the heavier ones can't be seated out further and they intrude too far into the case. If I load it right to the nuts (140 grainers at about 3300 fps), it gets pretty snappy and unpleasant, so I usually back it off a bit for a more enjoyable shooting experience. That is the only thing I don't like about the WSM cartridges. They seem to have more of a snap to their recoil instead of a push. My observations, anyway.
