7x57
35 yrs ago Ribtor Sales in Calgary was selling M98 Mausers that hed been re-worked with brand spanking new 7x57 bbls for about $40.They had been re-built in W. Germany, most likely in anticipation of sales to S. America. An Army buddy and I both bought one.Mine on a byf44 receiver.I re-built it into a very nice sporter with Redfield Jr mount,an alloy TG with hinged floorplate,a Beuhler safety, and eventually a synthetic stock. It it a very light and handy sporter.Subsequent to that I owned 2 M700 Remingtons in 7x57 which were dandies, especially the Mountain Rifle.I've since sold the M700s,but continue to use the M98.The 7x57 is an ideal deer ctg with 140/150gr bullets.I used to hunt the Battle River country and was out one day with a couple of friends who were using the then new 7mmSTW burning a cupload of powder to get 3400fps with a 140gr NoslerBT.I told them that I used 48gr 4350 or 50gr W760 with the same bullet to get 2800 fps with a lot less sound and fury-and my deer died just as quickly with less wasted venison.
