What would be your top pick for a milsurp 7x57 hunting rifle[a bubba'd shooter, not collectable]in terms of accuracy, finish, workmanship[ie 65x55 swede criteria] and what price range would be acceptable?

My personal favourite is my Orange Free State carbine; it is not a '98, but that is not as important as some would have you think!

It is light, handy, and has "wood to the nozzle" ( a personal preferential quirk).

Actually any of the 7x57 milsurps out there are very good shooters as long as they have good bores. Spanish, Serbian, Brazilian, Chilean etc. If they are in VG or better condition, they are even worth scopeing up. The only drawback to most milsurps are the long throats encountered on them for the 175grn round nose bullets they were designed for. The only exceptions that I know of are the Serbian 98s and the Brazilian 98s. bearhunter

whats wrong with a 175 gr round nose-wouldn't that have a high SD factor? I would shoot the 160 gr round nose in my 65x55 if I could get them.

I've had sported examples of both the 95 based actions, and the 98 based actions - both were well made, comparable to Swede standards. My fav was a 95 based Oberndorf with a heavyweight barrel - great shooter. The only shortcoming in the 95's is the lack of a gas vent in the bolt...

I would look for a 275 Rigby, just like Col. Corbert carried.

Jack O'Connor liked the 7x57. Seems to me his wife liked using it too. I forget what he had for a gun but I thought it was a custom job?
Make note to self: Dig out my old 1960's Outdoor Life magazines this weekend...

7 X 57

I like the 7 X 57 and it will do anything you want if they are loaded properly.
I have a few 1908 Brazilian rifles and they are good shooters and well balanced.

I am selling a spare 1908 in 7 X 57 I decided to thin the herd I just can’t keep them all.

7x57

35 yrs ago Ribtor Sales in Calgary was selling M98 Mausers that hed been re-worked with brand spanking new 7x57 bbls for about $40.They had been re-built in W. Germany, most likely in anticipation of sales to S. America. An Army buddy and I both bought one.Mine on a byf44 receiver.I re-built it into a very nice sporter with Redfield Jr mount,an alloy TG with hinged floorplate,a Beuhler safety, and eventually a synthetic stock. It it a very light and handy sporter.Subsequent to that I owned 2 M700 Remingtons in 7x57 which were dandies, especially the Mountain Rifle.I've since sold the M700s,but continue to use the M98.The 7x57 is an ideal deer ctg with 140/150gr bullets.I used to hunt the Battle River country and was out one day with a couple of friends who were using the then new 7mmSTW burning a cupload of powder to get 3400fps with a 140gr NoslerBT.I told them that I used 48gr 4350 or 50gr W760 with the same bullet to get 2800 fps with a lot less sound and fury-and my deer died just as quickly with less wasted venison.
