Wondering if or how difficult it would be to open up a Remington 700 action and magazine to accept the 7x57 Mauser? Looks like all I would need is about .265 more room.

I would recommend a long action... I think the short action 700 is best for .308 lengths and shorter... with the 6mm Remington you can't seat heavy bullets out where they should be. The 7x57 would be the same.

New box, modify receiver opening and rails. I've done this and it's not real tough, just fiddly work, go slow and careful. I have a Rem 600 with a magazine box that allows 3.1" col from the 284 Win cartridges it's chambered for. - dan

Well Dan you better give him all the details.. you know that is the next question.

I altered one short action but I didn't like how much of the action that had to be removed. Using the long action is just too easy.

I chose the LA for a 257Roberts [same parent case as the 7x57] that I had done. I could have used the short, but wanted the extra length so I could seat out the bullets to 3" with no problems.

Don't get me wrong, I love the 7x57 cartridge, but instead of going to all of the hassle and money opening up the short action, that I presume you have on hand, why not just go to the 7-08? The 7-08 is virtually identical in performance and there is a wider selection of ammunition available on the dealers shelves if you have to resort to factory ammo. Don't let me talk you out of a project that you really want to do, but it sounds like you have a short action and a take off barrel and are trying to save some money by putting the two together. If you do have a take off barrel, the barrel can be set back and the 7x57 chamber should be able to be cleaned out with a 7-08 reamer. bearhunter

As BH suggests, the 7mm-08 makes a lot of sense for a short action application. I you are concerned with the slightly extra case volume that you would gain wth the 7x57, you may wnat to consider a 7-08 Ackley Improved, although it is a handloading proposition only.

Remington 700 in 7X57

I agree with the other gentlemen that suggest a 7-08 would be a better choice of round.
The ammo manufacturers don't load the 7X57 to its potential, because there are so many firearms around that are 100 years old or more. Reason being it may be a liability thing. If you go to 7-08 you can get excellent factory loads, and as another member stated a wider variety of projectiles.
I took a Remington 700 BDL in 6mm and rebarreled it to 7-08, with a new 22" stainless Remington Mountain Rifle barrel. It gives me a light rifle that is about a 1/2 lb heavier then a Remington No7 rifle.
I have another new Remington medium weight 24" stainless barrel on my shelf waiting for a new project.

Is anyone looking for a used Remington 30-06 med, 222 med, 22-250 bull, Ruger 10/22, or a new Tikka 270 stinless barrel?
I seem to have a selection on my shelf that I don't have any need of.
