Hello everyone! I'm new to the forum and new to reloading. In a weak moment I recently bought a Schultz & Larsen 7X61 S&H so I'll be learning.(had to have it) No luck so far on finding the Norma brass. Any loading info would be greatly appreciated. I'm thinking of going with 300 win mag or 7mm rem mag brass. Does anyone have brass, dies, or ammo for sale? Thanks in advance for your help on this. Great forum. RB44. P.S. The rifle shoots great, running out of ammo.

Well, you have started out with a mighty tough calibre for reloading. For starters, you need a very strong press.
I have often stated that the 30-06 is probably the easiest and most convenient, of all center fire rifle cartridges, for reloading.
Near the other end of the scale I would place the 7x61.
However, I do believe there have been some changes made, in the brass and probably in the maximum loads, since the early models that I saw so much trouble with.

Loading info. is in Hornady manual 4th edition.
And Donnelly says you can make brass from 300 H&H or 300 Win Mag. form dies required.

Easiest brass to form to 7x61 is virgin 7mm Rem Mag brass [I prefer Winchester brand for this] You must go slow, and avoid getting any lube on the shoulder of the case because it will cause dents and/or folds in the shoulder area. That sharp 44º Shoulder of the 7x61 will give you fits if you don't go about it carefully. However, on the upside, it is a reasonably efficient 7mm chambering, and most of those S&L rifles are wonderfully accurate. Do not try to hotrod the cartridge in the S&L rifles. Your brass life will be short if you do. Enjoy, Eagleye.

The was a very good article in the March 2010 Rifle magazine on this caliber, I will look for it and if it is still around I will send it to you.

First off, welcome to the site:). There's a great bunch of guys here with a wealth of information and assistance.

The 7x61 S&H is also one of the Schultz & Larsens I have, mine is in a model 68DL.

As Eagleye made mention of, there are a number of readily available cartridge cases you can form the brass from but with a little digging, the real thing is out there. It wasn't cheap but I did happen on to a sizeable quantity of new Norma unprimed brass from Bashaw Sports in AB. Also, there's another guy on this site that has come through for me on some of that harder to get stuff that may be able to help you out. Henry Nierychlo. Give him a shout.

I've just made a deal and sold a fair sized batch of my surplus stuff and a 'modified' set of RCBS dies to a guy in Horsefly B.C. I have a Moose draw for that area and will be taking the 'goodies' up for the guy then. I do have a set of CH dies available but I'll send you a PM for further detailed discussion, including the die modification.

As H4831 stated, it can be a little 'tricky' to load for but as with any calibre you load for, it can be sweet when it all comes together. There was a modification made to the original brass, which I believe was an effort to compete with, at the time, the emerging new 'kid on the block', the 7mm Remington mag. There are a few hurdles but it's worth it.

Thanks for the help guys. I've been checking with Bashaw, Epp's, and Mystic. They all have 7x61 brass on order but have no idea when or if it is coming so I guess I'll go the other route. Yes H4831 the learning curve is gonna be steep on this one. Appreciate all the advice. RB44
