8 ball's C8 build progress thread

FWIW, on Roto 0, some C8's showed up in the system with flat-top receivers (otherwise identical to the C8) and the troops took to calling them the C8A1 - though I never saw a rifle thusly marked...? The Det in Victoria still has a bunch of these at the armory - saw some there this spring.

The only place I've heard of those variants being referred to as C8A1 is on this website. Never heard any troops refer to them as anything other than C8, they were also marked as such.

They came issued with an Eotech 552.

snip If you look at pics of the C8A2 on the Colt Canada website there appears to be something strange going on with the turned down portion where you'd mount an M203, it appears to be in the wrong spot. snip

Yeah, I was wondering about that. Seemed strange to me too.

The C8s with the flat-top receivers was an in between solution for the rotos until the C8FTHBs came out, there isn't an actual designation for them. Just like the "C9A1.5s" that came with a third cut down barrel and telescoping stock assembly that doesn't fold, along with the rails on each side of the handguard. Then the C9A2 came out. I don't see any official documents about those flat-top C8s and the "C9A1.5s" in any of our CFTOs.

Nevertheless, there are still some being issued. The PPCLI contingent in Vic has 'em for exercises - plain C8's with flat tops - still only marked as C8's. When I talked to the armorer for the PPCLI show and tell day at the Naden wardroom in May, he called them "C8A1's" - whether official or not.

Yeah that's what I've heard them being referred to as well. They just used extra C7A1 uppers and slapped a C8 barrel on it instead, I guess since we already had C7A1s in service for a while anyway.

This is the 1.5 I think you speak of.

Oh sorry, yes, missed the 9 bit. I suppose since we were talking about C8s.....

The collapsing stalk (dual rail) C9 is a "Para" version. I was told the part is from an FN Minimi. It's just a part. AFAIK there was never a numerical designation to it as it's put on both 91 and 92.

But I know what your saying. Came in the middle.

The C8A2 "LE Carbine" was also briefly used by Danish SOF - the M203 cut is "NOT" in the M4/M4A1 barrel position and honestly I don't know WTF it is there for.

I have a pic I took of one floating somewhere in Cyberspace.

The 'C8A1' was actually signed for by several folks as a C8A1 in Afghan, there have been C8, C8A1, C8SFW, C8FTHB, and a C7A2/Short FTHB signed for all by the same unit (1PPCLI).

The C7A2/Short FTHB was the weirdest - but was a C7A2 issued with a 16" FTHB additional upper (no RAS).

Only real difference in the C8SFW to the C8FTHB was no RAS on the FTHB, and depending on who it got issued to a different Simon Sleeve and the Muzzle device.

Many Carbines and parts thereof where bought as IOR buys and also begged, borrowed or stolen from the better budgeted side of the CF...

Hi, I'm new to this site, and am interested in building a C8FTHB. I could get the upper and bcg but for the life of me i cannot get two pieces: (1) Simon Sleeve; and the Diemaco TrIad. I have a KAC RAS, so if I could replace the Triad, I will be good. But does anyone know where I can get a Simon Sleeve, or someone make one for me. Also, since the Diemaco barrels are pretty much non-existent, can I use a Colt 6920 barrel and have the barrel turned for the Simon Sleeve?

BTW: 8 Ball, I love your project.

Use a Colt 6721 barrel. That's what I did for mine. It's the correct thickness. It's also easier to profile.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think what everyone is referring to as a Simon sleeve is actually just collar for the M203 mount. A Simon sleeve is a collar that was put on to M16 or M4 barrels to be used with the Simon Granade launcher. The Simon launcher is a door breaching grenade launcher that has never been in the CF, perhaps it exists in the "black army (SF)" but not in the regular forces. The Simon sleeve is also different dimensions than the M203 sleeve.

You're right, the simon sleeve has nothing do to with the Simon breaching round. The simon breaching round is a self contained system that slides on over the barrel, no seperate launcher is required. The CF Simon sleeve is there to allow the mounting of the Diemaco quick attach M203 and to permit a bayonet to be used. Don't know why it's called a Simon sleeve, probably because Simon came up with it.

You're building an obsolete clone: as a Colt Kool-Aid drinker I get it. Please save the barrel though...the SOCOM barrel is a lifetime barrel for most uses, get something cheaper for the clone build....please!. As for the two position stock, don't do it man, it is not functional and you can't tell anyway. Use a Diemaco or Colt 4 position. Good luck with the build, love the C8. Oh, stick an A2 aperture in the upper too...you'll have a gun that looks old school but is way more shooter friendly.

will a a2 rear flip sight fit a1 sight parts?

reason i ask is, i'm seriously thinking on a 11.5 commando build.

regarding a a1 sight, i don't see a big differance between the close quarter and distance hole.

much rather have a a2 style like the old c7 a definate differance between the holes. so if a a2 aperature will work with the a1 hardwear i woiuld perfer it.

So at this point I have virtually everything that I will be needing to complete this build either in hand or ordered! Ordered the carbine gas tube and pin. Ordered a Stag LPK. I understand that they use the same original supplier as Colt, even if they are not finished at the same place. I am still needing a round hand guard cap and the A1 rear sights that I am using are robbed from another A1 upper that I have so I will need to replace them at some point. If anyone can point me to these small parts it would be appreciated!

The barrel I am going to use is the Green Mountain one from Wolverine Supplies. I do not have it in hand yet, but I am assuming it comes with the M4 cuts. The receiver that I am using does not have the M4 cuts and I know it will work with this combination but I am wondering if anyone knows where I might get my hands on a barrel extension without the M4 cuts? This would be "proper". I am all about proper! :D

I have gone a different route for the BCG. I had a Colt FA BCG (pictured in the OP) that was going to be used for this, but, as the rest of the rifle is not Colt anyway, I have ordered an Armalite BCG to use for this and the Colt BCG is going into a Socom build with an actual Colt barrel and a actual Colt M4 upper. Anyone know where I could get my grubby paws on a set of Colt carbine hand guards? A small detail, but the rest is Colt already............:)

More pics in a few days once some more pieces come in!
