8 pellet Flitecontrol

See the answer to your questions are all covered off below. I'm not suggesting that I would ever want to harm anyone, I'd like to get the most performance out of my shotguns though. Ensuring that all of the payload goes where it's supposed to makes perfect sense to me. If I can buy 9 pellet, given the choice, why wouldn't I buy 8?

So I guess the basic answer to avoiding 00 Buck flyers is to buy 8 pellet shells and avoid 9 pellet ones.

About chokes: yeah I once cancelled the purchase of a current model M4 when I realised it came with a modified choke tube and just that one, but since I bought my current cero coated one for wet weather hunting, the mod choke makes sense. I assume a cylinder choke tube will not break the bank (been nervous about finding out though).

I do like this guy's knowledge level and presentation style, will have to run through all of his videos.

if I were to be concerned with over penetration, but still wanted the best for terminal performance, Federal LE132-1B (IWBA did a great article on this one). Unfortunately it is discontinued.

I have 100 shells of 9 pellet inbound (thanks 1ABNDT), and I'm now to understand that the reason I'm having problems locating 8 pellet, is because it's been discontinued...which makes perfect sense. Discontinue the performing load in favour of another pellet. Gawd damned fudds.

demand drives supply. Many LE agencies have gone away from the shotgun towards a carbine, the demand likely dropped

Yesterday, I found Cabelasbasspro has 25 round boxes of cheep 9 pellet 00 Buck stuff on sale, $24 a box. Like birdshot, these are no doubt best used for recreation and practice, but will be more realistic recoil wise than say the milder 7.5 shotshells. The buck stuff is also made in Canada!

Ellwood epps has the force 2 buck shot on sale. It's almost reasonable enough to try. It's suppose to break up thus avoiding over penetration. I have not tried it
Federal 9 pellet tac and premium have always worked well for me

Cabela's has Hornady® American Gunner® 12-Gauge 2-3/4” 00 Buck Shotshells that are 8 pellet for their wild Wednesday sale. $21.98
Now out of stock everywhere, ie online and locally. :(

Edit: there is a good price on American Gunner low recoil slugs, also Wild Wednesday.

So, I made it to the range, and I have to say, I'm not impressed.

Below is my target from 25 yards. I was shooting a 14" Mossberg franken835. The load was 2.75" 12 gauge flightcontrol, 9 pellet.

Only 7 pellets on an 8x11" sheet of paper. For context, this gun has an optic on it that was sighted in and routinely smashed 10 ring at 25 yards with slugs.
My POA is center target.

While the targets seem consistent, they are consistently disappointing. When I changed up to a 20" 590A1 and an 18" 870 Wingmaster, the pellets at least stayed on the target, but the darn flyer was always present (and 5-8" away from the pellet grouping).

Frustrated, I tried some old (like, 20 year old or more) Winchester Silver Box 9 pellet High Brass I had brought with me. The grouping was best out of all the flightcontrol 9 pellet, but as you can see, one pellet didn't print and two are flyers from the very tight group. I might cut a shell open, but I don't believe these have any of the plastic medium in between the shot, and I know for a fact that it doesn't have the venerated flight control wad/ shot cup. This was shot with the 870.

Am I nuts, or should I be expecting more out of 00 Buckshot at 25 yards? If we consider the red ring the shot at vitals, I'm only averaging 2 or 4 pellets out of 9!?

Painkillers, what ammo did you buy? The 1300 FPS version or the 1100 FPS version?

In my testing the 1100 FPS version produces tighter groups.

Also, what choke did you use?

Flightcontrol ammo benefits from a choke up to a certain point .....

It's advertised as 1325 FPS.
The Mossbergs are Cylinder Bore (20" and 14")
The 870 Wingmaster is Improved Cyl (18").
The Winchester X load is unplated 00 buck and advertised as 1200 (VP?)

I thought the 3” 00 buck flight control would be great for calling coyotes. Even with a IC choke at 35 yards I was only getting a 6” pattern.

Depending on the size of the circle on your targets, I'm seeing a comparable spread (flyers and missing pellets as well?). Maybe my expectations are just Vang Comp wet dreams of 4" spread at 25 meters?

My circle is a small pie plate .... 9 inches in diameter .....

I think your results are right in there with what I got from my tests.

5 meters or 10 meters make quite a big difference when it comes to patterns .... ;)
