I happened to read a post on another site where a fellow supposedly killed a deer on the run at 800 yards with a single shot. This was not a military sniper or some long range competitor, rather an older hunter with about 40 years of hunting experience. My own feeling is that if the shot was indeed made,it was no more than a fluke.I would never take such a shot myself, and I don't personally know of any person that feels that they could consistantly make such a shot.As such,I feel that taking such a shot is unethical. What are your feelings?

There was some viseo circulating with some butt heads in the USA that shot at a pronghorn at about 700 yards, then it took off running.

He rolled it withthe next shot at 800 yards or something.

Young guy, lucky shot.

I'd call BS.....but that's just me. 800 yds with a hunting gun, presumably with a hunting scope (Not enough elevation to even see the deer once you achieve proper hold-over) add to that have you ever SEEN a deer at 8/10ths of a kilometer? even at 10X magnification, its tiny. Add to that the lead needed to hope for a hit (what....30 feet?)

Nope...I say BS.

Just imagine the lead you would have to give at 800 yds let alone the windage . Considering where I hunt I take shots at running deer out to about 300 yds
and thats it for me.Hell I even want a rest for that far now.

Supposedly the deer was running broadside.I don't know the cartridge that was supposedly used, but using a 7mmremmag shooting the 140gr tsx at 3200fps as an example,I ran some numbers through a ballistics calculator. At 800 yards the drop was 130" ,a 10mph wind would cause a drift of 47" and the lead necessary for a target at 25mph would be 447".Doing some extra calulations a 12 mph wind would change the windage to 59" enough to cause a miss,a target speed of 23mph would change the lead to 426" enough to cause a miss.So in other words, you would need to estimate both the wind and target speed within 1 mph holdover about 11ft and use a lead of about 37.25ft to hit the vital zone.

I shot a spike buck once at somewhere around 80 to 100 yards and it was hit but took off running, so I swung with him and kept shooting and hit him again with one of two shots I took, and I figured that was ####house luck. Fortunately he was broadside to me.

800 yards?

A miracle.

You'd be surprised how many people don't know what a yard is. They think thay can judge distances, then you show them they're WAAAYYY off with your rangefinder. It was probably 800 feet.;)

Exactly what i was thinking. It's amazing how many 500 yard shots take place at 200 yards :)

Quick math

A .30 cal bullet starting at 3000 fps it would be 154" (that is 13 feet) low at 800 yards if the gun was zeroed at 250 yds. Any kind of wind would deflect it a lot as well. In order to hit a target using hunting gear the animal would not even be in your field of view. If you have ever tried to hit a static target off of a bench at that range you will know that the shot was beyond lucky or just hard core B.S.

Next time you are at the range watch for how many people can actually hit a 10" circle at 200 yds. Last year I made the mistake of going to the range the weekend before hunting season. The place was packed with 20 or more guys shooting. Not one tried 200 yds everyone was shooting at 100 yds. The best group I saw was 2" and the worse was over 12". If this represents an average sampling there is no way in hell you make 800 yd shots with hunting rigs. For me I pulled out my precision rig dropped three rams at 500M with three shots. Those guys just sort of stared at me. I offered a few guys a try with my rig but no takers.

X3, estimating distance is a lot like weighing fish, the guesstimate is often way more spectacular than reality. I have seen lots of guys with 16"ish bass Guesstimate the weight at 5lbs (reality, under 2.5).

just another BS internet story. I was in an airport waiting to go to mexico with my family a few years ago an he claimed he shot his elk at 900 yards, he had his 300 win sighted in 1 foot high at 100 yards beacuse wher he hunted everything was longrange. I remember thinking that might work OK using the truck mirror as a rest but not at 900 yards.

Maybe he actually shot it through the lungs on the first shot at about 700 yards and then it ran 100 yards before running out of air and dropping. He probably missed it the second shot but seen it fall just after that shot and thought that one was the one that did the trick.
