Gentlemen (and ladies),

I've been posed the question of what's involved in converting an 870 from 2 3/4 to 3". I'm fairly sure I read this somewhere, but the CGN search function is being the current CGN search function. What's involved in the process? How difficult / expensive?

Is it just the barrel and ejector spring?

Thanks,

Yep only barrel and ejector

1. The barrel MUST be a 3" chambered barrel. find your best buy
2. The spring steel ejector should be replaced ( highly recommended). This involves a new ejector and a couple of rivets, so you will have a different color rivet head on your receiver necessitating reblueing if you care. Brownells sells the ejector for $12, the two rivets are $5 each.

The gun will work safely without replacing the ejector ( ejection ports are the same size on all but very old 870's). but with a 3 inch fired shell it won't eject reliably and you will have to dig it out of the port with your finger. the 3 inch ejector has the bump 1/4" further back so the 3" case has cleared the mouth of the ejection port when it is bumped out.

It would be easier to just find a 3 inch shotgun there Mattie!!!!
Besides the 2.75 will do anything you ask of it as far as birds or bears are concerned.

Hey there big bad John!

Yeah, my bread and butter 870's the magnum model w/ the 3" barrel, but it only sees 3" for kicks once in a while. My buddy has a good older wingmaster that he's curious about the process of converting...

hmmm and here i thought that the 870 already could use 3" shells.... arnt most shotguns 2-3/4" & 3" or 3" & 3-1/2"?

That depends on the shotgun. My 870 was originally chambered in 2 3/4". It's at the smith now having the ejector upgraded. I've already got a barrel with a 3" chamber. The newer 870's are chambered 2 3/4" and 3" and the Super magnum will fire 2 3/4" - 3 1/2". All shotguns chambered in 3 1/2" will shoot all the way down to 2 3/4" but some semis will not cycle the lighter loads reliably.
