I have had a Desert Recon for almost 18 months now. The camo finish on the stock and forend is wearing off on the edges, but any finish would. It is always in my truck. It's a tool, not a toy, and I treat it accordingly. I don't baby it, but I take care of it and shoot it. The paint on the action and barrel is chipping. Doesn't bother me, but if your gun is only a range gun and you want it to stay purdy, you should probably chose another gun. To me, the external finish is purely cosmetic, as long as the gun works that is all that matters. On my Desert Recon cheap Federal clay target ammo sticks in the chamber, but everything else works great. That is way more important than how purdy the finish looks after a bit of use. You know, they're not scratches and chips, they're character lines...
Only thing to think about when it comes to finish is if you are around salt water. For hunting in the ocean from a sea kayak, the finish actually makes a big difference. My cousin ended up sandblasting and duracoating his 870 after one season of that. The original 870 express finish did not hold up at all around salt water...
