I found a good deal on an 870 Desert Recon model. I'm a little hesitant on the powder coated surfaces. does anyone have any experience on how well these finishes last? Are they tough? I don't mind the odd look of the mismatched color scheme. Anyone have one? Any thoughts?

i have one in that pattern and one with the a-tacs camo. i recently sent out the extension tubes, barrel clamps, brakes, a top rail and a flashlight out to cobra imaging in b.c. to dip these parts to match the factory camos. looking forward to seeing the finished products.

oneone, I have fired a few different desert recons, they are nice guns. In regards to your question about finishes, they are tough but not perfect, if let to slide around unprotected in a vehicle or something, the finish will eventually "chip" off, but if taken care or reasonably well it will hold up fine. Is it the 20" barrel with pistol grip stock, or the 18.5 with straight fixed stock?

jd, it's the 18.5/straight stock. I would like the pistol grip, but that is something I could always add in future. I'm slightly limited to this shop due to having a gift card.

I'm usually very careful with all my guns, so I'm assuming that this finish should last me a long time.

I have had a Desert Recon for almost 18 months now. The camo finish on the stock and forend is wearing off on the edges, but any finish would. It is always in my truck. It's a tool, not a toy, and I treat it accordingly. I don't baby it, but I take care of it and shoot it. The paint on the action and barrel is chipping. Doesn't bother me, but if your gun is only a range gun and you want it to stay purdy, you should probably chose another gun. To me, the external finish is purely cosmetic, as long as the gun works that is all that matters. On my Desert Recon cheap Federal clay target ammo sticks in the chamber, but everything else works great. That is way more important than how purdy the finish looks after a bit of use. You know, they're not scratches and chips, they're character lines...
Only thing to think about when it comes to finish is if you are around salt water. For hunting in the ocean from a sea kayak, the finish actually makes a big difference. My cousin ended up sandblasting and duracoating his 870 after one season of that. The original 870 express finish did not hold up at all around salt water...

IMO save some money and just get the 870 express tactical, exact same gun but 100$ cheaper, but if u want the quick feed stock then all Their own.
