Curious, how does brass work or wear steel? It's the other way around.
I have never replaced an 870 extractor because it was worn, only because it either was lost or it actually broke in half. 2 in 45 years... I have have no idea how any of them were manufactured.

Maybe it's just carbon residue,powder residue,sand and other crud embedded into the brass rim that's wearing the hook of the extractor down as it flips the case out.An example would be the way a cleaning pull through for a lee enfield rifle can damage the rifling at the muzzle.It's not the string cutting steel but the crud stuck to it as it's pulled out.
