870 extractor

Curious, how does brass work or wear steel? It's the other way around.

I have never replaced an 870 extractor because it was worn, only because it either was lost or it actually broke in half. 2 in 45 years... I have have no idea how any of them were manufactured.

???? Ever work on any mechanical equipment with brass not bronze bushings and see what it can do to a shaft with respect to wear. It is softer yes but will still cause wear
Once the sharpness is worn from the extractor hook, chipped or marked it should be replaced. They do wear. Just have to know what to look for
Cheers

My apologies to the original poster for the way off topic ... but he has received an answer to his question already.

If one were to take a 1/2 inch diameter brass rod and rub it across a steel barrel just as you would a hacksaw in cutting the barrel off... how long would it take to actually make a groove in the barrel?

I only experienced ejection issues with my new express when using the cheap Winchester shells.
Challenger shells work flawlessly in my express, are Canadian made, and the same price.

Maybe it's just carbon residue, powder residue, sand and other crud embedded into the brass rim that's wearing the hook of the extractor down as it flips the case out.An example would be the way a cleaning pull through for a lee enfield rifle can damage the rifling at the muzzle. It's not the string cutting steel but the crud stuck to it as it's pulled out.

Good point
Bottom line is they wear and have to be checked from time to time as part of regular maintenance, replaced as required. The MIM ones are a totally different profile especially the hook section from the start and just don't have the same ability as an original to pull hulls
Cheers

Good pic of the differences here
