I just got a new S&J +2 mag extension for my 870, only to find that the spring it was shipped with is too long. I need to cut it down so that the gun will feed properly. How long should a 6+1 capacity 870 spring be?
thanks,
How did you manage to cram a 40 inch spring into your gun? Mine is 28 3/8 inches long and it was a challenge. I have closer to 70 coils, unless I am counting a coil in a different way. Regardless, the spring binds up and the gun won't feed properly. Perhaps I should just demand a new spring!
thanks,
That sounds more like it. I was thinking that if I ended up with a +3 mag length spring, instead of a +2, all I would have to do is deduct the length of a shell and snip. Would be nice to know how long a Remington factory spring is though.
Assuming that problem is fixed, now what I really want from S&J is a fast mounting rail that uses the bayonet mount and attaches in the same way as a bayonet. Possible?
Actually I was thinking more of a rail that clips on like a bayonet. That way you could take it off like a bayonet when you didn't need it.
Unfortunately, basic loading tests with my 870 after cutting 1.5 inches off the spring haven't solved the spring binding issue. Although more reliable then before, the spring and follower get jammed in the new extension, with the follower being stuck where the new extension joins the mag tube.
I had to unscrew the mag extension to free it up, but when I started to unscrew it the spring released and fired the follower down the mag tube with such force that it became wedged!
Do you think that the spring is still too long, or is there a lip where the mag tube joins the new extension that may be catching the follower?
