870P - occasionally stuck @ 5 rounds

You'll notice that the new Remington 870 Magpul edition no longer has a magazine extension on it.

They changed the location of the lug-ring on the barrel. So the magazine tube is all one continuous piece.

Same design as a Mossberg 590 actually.

I didn't realize they even came with an extention initially and don't recall ever seeing one come to think of it.

I installed a S&J +1 on my Magpul edition Express making it 7+1.

The Magpul edition is the first (and only) 870 to have the barrel lug in that position.

All other 870 barrels have the lug way further back. Your barrel won't fit on any other model of 870.

I wonder if your problem isn't a shell stop that has goop behind it and can't move properly. This can result in intermittent cycling issues that might be blamed on the magazine. Scrub the shell stops on both sides using lots of solvent, then if possible, blow them out with compressed air, and wipe dry. You might even want to flush them with water, then blow any remaining moisture out with compressed air. I'm not crazy about shell stops that are staked in because of the maintenance difficulties they present, but the 870 has always been built that way.

Bud if you love the gun, send it to Casey at Tactical Ordnance and he will pimp that thing out for you and make it work just the way you want.

I might do that. Bought my follower from him and he was a pleasure to do business with.

Tighten the nut loosen the extension tube slightly.

I've tried that in the past and didn't work. However, I'm actually giving the opposite a try right now. So far, so good. Definitely not getting my hopes up though lol. Will test it out more later today.

Shell stops are clean. I don't believe it has anything to do with them. Not only does it occasionally not fit 6 rounds, but if I have 6 in the tube and chamber one, sometimes the next round will have no spring tension on it (will move around freely)... so the spring/follower is catching up on something.

The 'On occasion' part is the important part. Worked ok for a while with the snap caps, then quit? It happen with all live ammo too? You know anybody with a Choate or other aftermarket extension? The whole thing screams a QC issue with the extension. Assuming the thing feeds properly without the extension.
The thing still under warrantee? You get two years. You may want to contact Remington.

Yup.

If the bore diameter is not exactly centered in the tube, or if the thread is not cut just right,
you will have some problems.

Try using a different extension, and see how that works.

It's still under warranty. It's basically brand new. Purchased from Wolverine a couple months ago.

It happens both with snap caps and live ammo. It actually happened the very first day I got it. Unfortunately I don't know anyone with an aftermarket extension.

I've reinstalled the stock follower and have been testing it out this evening. Been spending quite a bit of time trying to get it to screw up... so far so good. Maybe I'll purchase a S&J follower and see how that works.
