8th Annual Upper Canada Double Gun Classic

Well, another Upper Canada Classic is in the books. A great day with great weather marred only by the absence of our resident pinfire expert, Steve (Pinfire) and our founder Patrick (VictoryXC) who has smartly retired and moved to greener pastures (known as Alberta). I'd also like to take this time to acknowledge and mourn the very recent loss of Brian Ward (Gunsaholic) who never had a chance to attend, stuck in Winnipeg as he was, but joined us in spirit every year. I have Brian to thank for introducing me to my now good friend, Chris Dawe.

I'd like to thank all who joined in to make the day great, especially Mike (Parkspipes), Mark Dube, Alvero (Beretta1963), John (Londonshooter) and Bryon (Bryben). And of course all who brought guns for us to ogle and handle. Mike and Josh from Ellwood Epps were there with a table full of guns on offer and that was a wonderful addition to the day. Big thanks to Epps for joining in on our day.

As usual, I believe the informal shoot resulted in Bryben having the high score. And, in an unforeseen upset, Bryben also won the coverted Gun of the Year award for his lovely Scottish Dougal sidelever. I don't have all the details on the gun at the moment but those, plus pics, will get posted.

Our first fundraising raffle was a raging success! We had a couple ardent supporters of the cause offer to buy all the tickets practically as soon as they went on sale. I think that speaks to both the goodwill the event has generated as well as the wonderful prizes donated by Chris Dawe of Stlllwater Restorations, John Butler and Claudio Opacek. All three prizes (chequering, restored axe with custom sheath, custom hand-made dog whistle) were or will be hand crafted by those fine gentlemen. I personally liked not underwriting the whole thing so again, thanks!

Mr Brian Hornacek of Houston Texas had his "bet" pay off as he won the grand prize of the chequering from Chris Dawe. Brian was one of those who offered to buy all the tickets. I think he's thanking me now for encouraging him to let others in on the raffle. Laugh2.

Now the hunt is on for an even better assortment of raffle prizes next year. I'd like to thank those who bought some tickets and immediately instructed me that if their ticket was drawn, to put it back in and draw another ticket. Goes to show the character of vintage gunb lovers!

I also want to acknowledge some of our attendees who come from a long way away just to attend this event. Brian from Houston, Chris from Newfoundland, Doug (Ol' Flinter) who I think is coming from the Ottawa area. It was kinda fun watching Doug shoot the skeet course with his black powder loads!. Well known and prolific CGN contributor Big Bad made it from the Ottawa area after several years of threatening to come.

Thanks for putting in the work to make this happen fellas. I had a nice time. Some really nice guns on display at this event and interesting people as well.

I thought it was very nice of the Oshawa Clay and Target Club to waive the $25 guest fee, at least for those of us who arrived gunless and weren't intending to shoot. This was perhaps because the club house was being rebuilt but I know I wasn't the only out of towner who appreciated the welcoming gesture.

My only disappointment was not winning one of the prizes so generously donated, especially the axe. I will donate a prize of useable old ammo for next year in multiple gauges. It’s all old and shootable. I may have another suprise for the attendees of the 2025 event. Thinking hats or maybe quality tee shirts of modern materials. Lots of options but a logo from our collective would be nice. Send ideas for a logo and I’ll hold a vote and make it the one for 2025

That's a great pic of Doug (Ol'Flinter) making lots of smoke, fire and ka-boom. And, even more important he can still put up impressive scores.
Doug and I go back over 50 years and we have done a lot of shooting, hunting and fishing in that time. Years ago we were 2 man team partners in skeet and won our share of prizes. We had lots and lots in common but I never got the black powder enthusiasm that Doug has.

I was fortunate to meet Doug thru selling him an O/U browning shotgun. As pleasurable a fellow he is, we got too talking and hes now a member of my local shotgun club. Hes very well liked and extremely knowledgeable and has lots of experience both hunting and smokin clays. A GREAT addition to anyones friend list!! Youd think hed remember his shooting glasses HAHA

Great weather last weekend.
Had a super time hanging out with friends and making new ones.
Some fantastic guns too.
The 500 Nitro Express Heym from Epps' fit nicely!
The finest pointing gun that I shouldered all day, and there were quite a few, was a Westley Richards Droplock previously owned by Ashcroft.
It made it's way all the way from BC to NB and then back to the ON for the show!
I get it now, why these are special, Epps had some Droplocks too and they all feel similar, thin, balanced and light in hand with a narrow sight plane, I imagine super-quick....almost like a 20 bore sxs and not a 12 at all.
The next thing of course is now I wonder how they shoot.... ?!!!

I definitely hope to attend next year.

Many thanks to our organizers and the weatherman who was on our side this year! There were so many beautiful gun again, even without PINFIRE but oh those double rifles..... Gotta love the pic of my Ozzie and the fireball, for which I can thank Longstud and his high tech camera. See ya-all again next year if the good lord is wiling and the creek don't rise....

The gun that fit me the best was your lil single shot 20ga William Evans
