With the weather turning around I’m finally able to start wringing out the Ruger 1S and man I think I’m going to be liking this round.
Those big cases slide though the die like a knife through butter and compared to the 375 H&H the 1S is lighter and better balanced than a 1H 375.
Loading 55 grains of RL 15 behind 286 grain Lapua Mega in Hornady brass.
Recoil is far less than I imagined it might have been. More like a push than a punch.
Grouping about 2 inches at 100 yards with a 4 power Leupold which is likely more about my lack of talent than the rifle.
My first ever 9.3 but I just wish I’d started sooner.
Anyone else a fan of the old rimmed veteran?

Love the 9.3 X 74R, I had a No. 1 that I sold to a buddy.

Still have dies, brass and bullets I'm sure I'll own another one at some point.

A little more tuning in the works today and then I’m breaking into a box of North Fork CPS solids to see how they shoot.
At 2 dollars a bullet I’m going to be pretty careful using them to punch paper but Africa is likely a long way down the line given the conditions today.
Might have to spray paint a buffalo on the target board (;

I am a medium bore fan with a bunch of 358 caliber guns. I did have a 9.3x62 Ruger No 1 a few years back but got rid of that when I bought a Ruger No 1 in 35 Whelen. I did; however, get back into the 9.3 game last Fall when I traded a fellow CGNer for his F.A.I.R Combi in 12 gauge over 9.3x74R. What beautiful gun.... and round. The shotgun patterns just beautiful but I ran into some trouble with the grand old cartridge with number of hangfires. The seller had sent some primed case for me to use and I loaded up some H414 behind some cheap Prvi 286gr bullets. About half of the rounds fired had a slight delay after firing. As a result the groups were terrible. I initially thought it was the primers but I feel it is more likely the H414 in such a big ol' case. I have not had it back out to try as I got busy with other tihings but I did load up some Speer 270 gr bullets in front of R15 with 215 Federal Primers. I am sure that it will shot dandy with the bulkier powder and magnum primers. I will keep you posted once I get out and get shooting some groups.

Yes keep me posted please
I’m using Federal 215 primers behind my load of RL 15 and no ignition problems so far.
Lots room in that big old case so going to look for some data on even slower powder like 7828.
Right now I’m using data from Hornady 8th edition

I have had two of the Ruger No.1's in 9.3X74R and also made a swap barrel set on an H&R Handi rifle, with 9.3X74R, .303 Brit and 12 gauge. I shot four or dive deer and one bear with the No.1-S 9.3X74R... nice cartridge.

I’m not familiar with that chambering at all, but interested.
Dumb question.......R ???? rimmed?????

Yes you’re spot on “R” stands for rimmed.

Mine 9.3x74R is a Fabarm Asper. I recently acquired it but since the range is now closed I haven’t had a chance to shoot it yet. I’ll see if I can post some photos though.

I'd be happy pushing hardcast 286-300 gr boolits at 1800 fps from a Tikka/Valmet 512. Tried a few some years back & they were nice to carry, quick on target
and tight shooting units.
Now that ammo and components are easier to get for budget minded folks, the 9.3x74R makes a great option. ;)

I had a #1 in the 9.3...and like an idiot I sold it.

A couple years later I latched onto an Asper...and like a complete idiot I sold it.

Now I just picked up a Brno Express O/U in this cartridge, and I hopefully have learned my lesson; I want to keep this one. I've used the 9.3x62 quite a bit as well, but that's just a nice, balanced, all-around cartridge. The 9.3x74R is one of those cool old numbers that makes you smile every time you drop one or two into the chambers and snap it shut.

It's hopefully going to be my deer rifle this year. :)
