9.3x62

I have been wrestling with 9.3x62mm vs. .35 Whelen for a few years now.

Unfortunately for me I'm not a fan of my 9.3 rifle and will be listing the barreled action shortly. That leaves me with just a .35 Whelen in a single shot, which is super nice and compact but also only holds one shot - maybe not the best for my de facto "heavy game" rifle. I would definitely consider 9.3x62mm though, much like the .35 Whelen it operates in a velocity window which helps to ensure reliable expansion and deep penetration without excessive recoil or unpredictable close range bullet performance. You can get 286gr bullets easily over 2400 and that'll take care of the most ornery cervids and grouchiest bears without much consideration. Under 300 meters? Easy peasy. Over? Practice more.

I did discover a .35 Whelen load though. 250gr @ 2650 fps. 4000fpe. Looks super crushing and is decently accurate. I don't know if the same "magic load" can be adapted for 9.3x62mm but it would be neat to see those 286's up over 2500 or so to get close to the Whelen load. Hmm. Time to fire up GRT.

I recall this being hashed out years earlier here and elsewhere, where if you drive the same weight and same pressure behind the 9.3 or the Whelan, the 9.3 wins.

BUM that video should be used by environment to show how it is the right way to do things, like how to approach a downed bison!!
Good shooting! How far were you on the first shot?

From what other have told me, Whynot? and Medvedqc there is no real benefit in trying to drive those 286gn bullets much over 2400fps, I like the low recoil at that speed for that weight !

As a 338 wm guy I am questioning all of my life choices now

Yep - I have a 338 Win Mag also - is what I was getting with the 250 Partitions, if not a bit more. For whatever reason, I prefer the 9.3x62 - maybe is the number in magazine versus the push feed Model 70 - but neither have been fired more than twice, "for real" ... Best load for me these days, is 225 Accubond in the 338 Win Mag - I will leave the "heavier lifting" to the bigger bores ...

I've only got one of the 62 members of the 9.3 family; a Husqvarna 649 that I had re-stocked this winter.

Before I had the new stock made with a recoil pad, it felt like it kicked as bad as my Whitworth in .375 H&H. We'll see this year how it kicks. I'm expecting good (pleasant) things.

Draw odds are pretty good for the newly opened area iirc, I’ve seen a few in there

Also saw tracks and sign on an old winter road in the Milligan hills/ silver lake area east of the highway. Way out there, never seen any reference to that herd in academic or government literature

BUM - Congrats - Very Kool - Those Bison are MONSTER Big EH ! I have being puting in for years here in BC for a LEH draw - No Luck Yet !

But my 416 Taylor is Ready and Awaiting if i do get a draw ! RJ

Honestly, I couldn't tell you what it weighed, but it was most of 7 foot at the top of the hump and it took three strong men to wrestle a front quarter into the truck. We were 10.5 hours getting it broken down and loaded into the truck. The cape, once fleshed and dried, had to be trimmed to make the 100lb limit for freight to the tannery! Shoulder mount (that was a really dumb idea) is at my Aunt and Uncle's house. 4 foot from the hump to brisket, and 4 foot sticking out from the wall. It makes my cape buffalo look small!

I lasered it after the shot...37 meters. Sure felt, and looks, a lot closer. He looks like he is about to eat my lunch!

I just knew that I didn't want him to run off and die in a hell hole. As close to on the trail as possible was my goal!

reaching faster speed is doable with 286 or 250 grains but for what purpose? the phs i ve met and worked with never been able to tell the differences between a 375 or a 9.3. the 9.3x62 is not a 35 whelen for sure as well.

i did 2493 fps at 6 paces with my zastava and 285 ory bullet but the rattling was a little more than 2340 or even 2400. with the good stock and good recoil pad not a problem but with the zastava original stock not very good.

having a good round nose 320 grains is stepping the 9.3x62 in another category.

what is the most important is to find what works for you and stay away from 9.3 hornady 286 grains for hunting ... great for plinking.

scoping the 9.3x62 is easy: 2-7, 1.5-5, 2.5-8x36 ... pick what you like or can find.

without even trying to bargain on it have a look here:

Thoughts an a 20” barreled 9.3x62? I like short barrels on almost everything but my magnums. Been thinking of having mine cut and crowned to 20. Any one else shooting that length?

funny a member here asked me about it as i have a great 375 ruger in 20 in ... shot one tikka battue in 9.3x62 with a short barrel and like it and easy as well for manipulation if needed.

i ve seen 26 and 24 barrels mostly in africa and here i like the roughly 22 barrel but that is just me.

I now have three. I have a re-barrelled Vanguard with a heavy barrel, a Husqvarna 46A and a Husqvarna 1900, I used to have one in a Zastava and another in a Brno 600. I bought the 46A just before I stumbled on the 1900, tried selling the 46A for what I paid for it, one low ball offer, then I took it out and shot it and I decided to keep it. The 46A will stay with open sights it has a folding leaf sight, a Huber trigger plus the barrel was shortened to 22", the Vanguard will remain my rifle when calling moose with a 1.5 x 5. I have not decided if the 1900 will get a low power scope or a peep sight or both. I have not shot the 1900 yet but I found recoil to be quite tolerable on the other two.

Not overkill at all. Pretty well balanced in my opinion. Moose, bison, bears and bou would testify to its effectiveness.

no issues running short barrels with the 9.3, it's pretty efficient. Those Barsness loads have some impressive numbers when you look at the velocity out of shorter barrels.
Good (subjective) performance with my CZ550 FS (20.5"), H&K SLB2000 (20"). I just picked up a Verney-Carron pump with a 20" barrel as well but haven't put any rounds through it. I prefer the handling of shorter barrels.

CZ550 FS with 20.5" barrel here.
250 Nos AB 3/4" group at 200 yds. 2625 fps with H4895.
270 Speer SP 1 1/8" group at 200 yds. 2475 fps with Varget.
I can confidently say it's the most accurate rifle in my safe.
Hits moose and bull elk hard in NE BC.
