9.3x74r, user any feedback?

Great calibre/cartridge, very controllable and not obscene in the recoil department by any stretch. Had a Ruger No.1.. that I probably shouldn't have sold many years ago. If you can find a decent gun, it's a wonderful 'big' bore cartridge capable of doing everything you'd need in North America, or really anywhere if you travel/hunt. Bonus being it doesn't tend to require massive guns either, so whether it's a single barrel, side by side or O/U, they're fairly svelte and great to carry.

My first 9.3X74 was in 1982, a BRNO o/u double, when most had never heard of it, components were non-existent, let alone loading info. Luckily I knew Jack Carter (Trophy Bonded) and he made up a some test bullets. Same with Barnes (thanks, Connie!) and connections within Speer (I have the only Grand Slams they unknowingly produced)! These led to lots of experiments, all good!

Quickly it became a favourite for the big stuff and I now have 3 more doubles in SXS, a Ruger, a Farquharson, and an Alex Henry, all single shots. So my best advice is to go for it, and enjoy yourself, I do!!

thanks Barrie i will enjoy it. seems you got some classified bullets ....

The 9.3 x 74R is very much an underappreciated cartridge in North America. Not so in Europe and Africa. With bullets ranging in weight from 232 to 325 grains it is a versatile, hard hitting cartridge that is suitable for deer/black bear/moose in North America up to the largest plains game such as Eland in Africa. Where it's legal the 9.3 x 74R has been used to harvest the Big Five in Africa, however it is considered marginal for Elephant.
