90gr Berger VLD and the 223 - 500m Group 1 1/16"X 1/8" see post 357

Personally, I wouldn't get a reamer made up for that much freebore because the only use for that reamer will be 90VLD/BT's. If you get a standard .223 or .223 match reamer with a standard freebore length, you can still chamber another barrel and use it for whatever bullet you want, 69-90grns (assuming match bullets) and then when you get the throater you will be able to cut however far you wish. If you need to set back the barrel after a couple thousand rounds and want to switch bullets, you aren't limited by the excessive freebore length of a custom reamer.

Just my opinion.

After a bit of consideration, i decided to go order a PTG match reamer and a PTG uni throater. As mentioned by others, this will allow me some flexibility if I decide to chamber for other match bullets in the future.

PS, Thanks for the bullet offer Matt, I have a couple of hundred 90 Bt's & VLD's on hand that I got from Mysticplayer. This will allow me to do some load development before I stock up.

I was looking at rebarreling my savage 12FVSS to a 1-7 shilen to use the 90 Grain VLD bullets. I ran the numbers through the JBM ballistics calculator and at max velocities listed and looks like its basically a wash between the berger 90 and the 75 Grain Amax. I have read all the post in this thread mystic is getting velocities up by lengthening the throat, (which is something that I can not do) and manitou posted some results coming from the states.

Its a new season and is anyone winning f/tr with a 223 here in Canada?

Snuck on to Canadian America |Cup team in Ottawa in Aug with 223 shooting 90gr Bergers, we came second to the USA

I have watched Liberty shoot many times and he shoots his 223 rem with a 7.7 twist with 80gr Bergers with stunning accuracy and runs with most .308 win in F class but when his new 1/7 twist 30" arrives soon, mark my words, he will be in winners circle in F class FTR. I think he is entered in the 223 shoot at Connaught this coming weekend and I will put him the top 2 or 3 shooters and he could end up winning it.even with his little handycap shooting 80gr against the 90gr at 7,8 & 900 meters, he could be a lot of points ahead and Vs at 3,5 & 600y
I know people say yah everybody shoots 1/4" groups on posts on internet, but liberty does it and I watched him shoot a .520" group at 300y and many groups well under 1" at 300y
manitou

I was right Liberty won the F/TR 223 shoot at Connaught in Aug, beleive me you will see him in the winning circle with his new tru-Flyte 30" 1/7 twist shooting 90gr Bergers

I have a new 29" Kreiger barrel on the way to be chambered for a 223 bolt gun. I want to give the new Berger 90 Gr VLD's & BT's a try. I am looking to get a 223 rem match reamer with a longer freebore. Does anyone have a freebore lenght recommendation for these bullets or a print of a reamer they have used. The reamer will have a 1.5 degree throat angle.

Diver I used a 223 rem Pacific Tool Match reamer will not use again, have to use small base just to tight, I will go with wylde and throat reamer

Hi firstly it was the America Match (The America's Cup is for sailboats not rifles... ;-)

Not only were there three teams but the Canadian team shot well - http://dcra.ca/results/2010/CFRC/a751.htm

manitou210 I am curious what your 900m elevation spread is like now that you have a season shooting the 90s. Are you able to keep fifteen out of fifteen shots within the height of the 12" 5-ring? Or a bit better? And, out of fifteen fired shots, how many would lie within the 6" elevation of the V-bull?

Nice shooting Team CANADA !!!!!!!

Just got back from the Farky and we shot in a gale on Sat. Bob Pitcarn shot a 223/90gr Berger VLD. Although he was shooting on a double target, he was also shooting pure TR.

He shot the highest score and a very strong V count. Most of us F shooters were trying to shooting something resembling black :)

had a nice chat with him on his cartridge and he is all smiles about how it. He did design his won reamer too. has worked for him so far. Maybe he can share more about the vertical side of things.

Certainly had zero issues despite us being bounced around like rag dolls.

There were a few 223's shot in FTR and some very nice results were coming.

Shooters are starting to figure out the combos for tuning. Hope some will post their results so we can share.

Jerry,

What distances are the Farky shot at?
I don't think the verticals we're worried about are going to start showing up before 800m, and are the worst at 900.

Bump for curiosity. Any new developments?

Can you compete with Is the 90gr VLD in FTR in Ontario? I was looking at the ORA website and lists 81gr as the max weight or has this changed?

I have just put away my F Open stuff and sold off most everything. Now to wait for the F TR stuff and start drafting up plans for my new stock and bipod design.

The development of the 223/90 is pretty much in the same spot as earlier this fall.

We know it works. Basic parameters like twist and speeds have been determined. Things like vertical tuning and best OAL vs throats are still being tested but that is also coming together.

The next big jump will be in new powders slated to be released in 2011. If they work, then they can move the 223 up another notch. I will be trying some others powders not commonly talked about and will post my results.

For now, just taking a break from shooting as it is -15C today. Focus on design work for the new toy.

It will be different.....

Jerry

Bryan's numbers for the 115 DTAC are from before they were pointed, so they're low. The new DTACs are only offered as pointed.

Okay Jerry, -15C is would be great to shoot in. In fact here in Alberta, we would probably wear shorts to shoot in.....Temperature here at this moment....-31C!!!! How is that for cold shooting weather???:eek:

Is this "Superformance" one of the powders you are talking about?

Looks like Hornady is using it to get 100 - 200 fps extra muzzle velocity out of some of their factory ammunition:

The following 5.56 NATO ammunition looks very interesting for old style Service Rifle matches 1 - 12 (100 to 500 meters out of an AR):
