Hi there fellow CGNers. I'm hoping that someone could shed some light on this for me.

I have a 935 mossburg with the over-bored barrel which makes it not able to fire slugs. I need a bear defense shotgun with a short barrel and I would like to use my 935. The only smooth bore short (18.5) barrel I can find is for a 930. Mossburg claims you can not put a 930 on a 935. I feel like they say that as a liability issue because some idiot will jam a 3.5" in his 3" chamber and sue them. Does anyone know if the barrel would fit and be fine for shooting 3" buck or slug rounds? If I cant get a short barrel for this gun, my next best option is to find a cheap Tac 500 or something and just have to have another gun. :)

Thanks for the help

I posted a similar thread last year and didnt get a response. The good news is that I have a 930 on the way late next week so I'll be able to compare the two guns myself and see what fits and what doesnt. I'll post my findings when i have a moment

Buy a cheap mossberg 500. Cheaper and almost impossible to find additional barrels for a 935. The rifled barrels do show up though.

You cannot do it safely. And why does a back bored-barrel prevent you from firing slugs exactly? Or is over-boring different? They back bore usually as part marketing and part to capture all the potential gas when shooting steel.

I don't believe in buying cheap guns for bear defense. Think about it: cheap gun for grouse hunting doesn't fire, no big deal. Cheap gun for bear defense doesn't fire, you just got eaten.

Anyhow, Mossberg 500 will fire when you pull the trigger. Stay away from that 320 would be my advise.

Oh, and hang your food at night :)

Hmm looked up the over-boring on Mossberg's site, interesting. Ya no slugs for you. Also didn't know you couldn't cycle 2.75" shells according to Mossberg. Crazy gun. Made for ducks and low flying aircraft .

The 2.75" shell issue seems to be just when its new. My well used 935 cycles 2.75" no problem. As far as the 930 barrel fitting, I am expecting that it will work just fine, hope we find out for sure.

But canada ammo has an amazing deal on dominion arms shotguns right now, $199 and you could get a whole new gun?

As I mentioned, I'll hopefully be able to privide all the details about this by end of week. My 935 also cycles 2.75" shells without issue. Maybe some of the early 935's had more of an issue with this because they had a different style gas piston that had a two piece gas seal. I believe Mossberg changed this to the one piece gas piston fairly quickly into production. From my experience, the guns with the one piece piston cycle 2.75" shells more reliably. In fact I have two 935's and they each have the different pistons i speak of. Either gun will run better with 2.75" when using the one piece gas piston. But as you mention, these guns have to be run hard to be worked in. Once the gun is worked in, it becomes way more reliable with light 2.75" loads

This may or may not help. I however run a 835 slug barrel on my 590A1 with out issue. If you can take a look at the way the barrel mates to the reciever and if it matches you are good to go.

Thanks man, I look forward to hearing your results.

My 935 will cycle 2 3/4 as long as it is more than a 3 dram load and I dont have many round through it. Once it is broken in most guys report you can fire heavy target loads or maybe even light ones.

Yeah I have that all under control right now I have a 45-70 marlin but its real heavy to put in a backpack when youre hiking etc. By cheap shotgun I was referring to a used mossy 500 or something similer. Not a 200 dollar wonder. :) need it to make bang bang when I need it for sure.

Thanks KRJ. I just dont want to buy a barrel to look at it and find it wont work. But I think the previous poster is gonna do a swap for us all and post results.

The Mossberg site lists a 22" turkey and a 22" slug barrel for the 935 .you might try contacting Clay at Prophet River firearms a .cgn sponsor to see if he could import one for you .

I've seen some shorter barrels in camo, but with cantilever scope mount......... al's corner store in arnprior ont. had a few in stock last time I was there. they may be able to get you something different.

Yeah, I know all of those are options. I really want a smooth bore cylinder and as short as possible to sticking in my hiking pack or in the tent.

Well my 930 arrived so I was finally able to compare it to the 935. Both front and rear stocks are interchangeable. The whole gas system is the same. As for the barrels, this is where it gets interesting. For the easy part, the 935 barrels will not fit on the 930. Now here is where it gets interesting....i have two 930 barrels; a 26" bird barrel and a 24" rifled barrel. Since the rifled barrel has sights and not a rib, it will not work on the 935 because the barrel slides right into the receiver as the rib is what would stop it against the receiver. The smooth bore barrel fits perfectly and I have no reason to believe why it wouldnt work on a 935. I was able to manually cycle shells through the gun, but be forewarned I DID NOT ATTEMPT TO SHOOT THE GUN! Would I buy a 930 barrel specifically for a 935? No, I dont think that would make much sense. So, there it is....the mystery is solved
