I am considering getting a race gun in 9mm major the STI Stinger to be more exact. My question is I don't reload and I was wondering if anybody knew if there was any factory ammo that would make major, also is anybody has the Stinger and what do they think about it???
 
i dont no about over there but im shore in nz your not alowed to have a 9mm in major loads cos there to hot ??? what the deal in can ? or is 9mm major just what yous call 38 supper ?

With the old major PF of 175, there was no way to load 9x19 to major and not exceed SAMMI maximum pressure (which is lower than NATO or European standards). Several IPSC regions banned 9x19 major for liability reasons.

Now that the PF for open has dropped to 160, it's not such a stretch and I suspect more people will try.

However, since the 1911 frames are so popular, and they can accomadate longer cases, the need to hotrod 9x19 seems small. About the only real savings is in the cost of brass. Since factory loaded 160 pf ammo isn't a reality, reloading is the only way to go.
 
we have a fellow who shoots a single stack 9mm major gun. over the last couple of years i have replaced just about ever part in the gun. i am not sure why but it does seems to batter the gun quiet a bit.

Some guy was shooting it at our club last nite...holy snappin *ss h*les is this stuff hot. He was shooting it out of a Glock 17 and it sounded like a comp gun...

All kidding aside...it probably wouldn't make major...but I'll bet it was damn close

Once broken in, the STInger will operate on factory +P (minor ammo) for practice purposes, but you will have to reload to get major out of 9mm for it.

The truth is, any race gun will require reloading to get it to major.

Contact Dansy on this site - he has a STInger. There are more in the country, but I don't think any of the others hang around this board.

As for 9mm major being destructive to a gun; depends on the gun.
On an STI with a barstock CNC machined slide and expert fitting and recoil sping selection, you'll get as much life out of it as you would any other caliber; Super, 9X25, 9X40, etc.

On a homemade racegun with a Para, Springfield or Colt slide and without proper spring tuning, or something not designed for 9mm major like a glock or a CZ - the gun's lifespan will be significantly shortened.

9 major--I shot it in one of my open class guns for a year then rechambered to 9x21. No other mods had to be done to the gun. You will have to reload for both of these rounds. If you want to shot open and do not want to reload then get the Stinger in 9 major. Find the fastest +P+ 9mm factory loading you can and shoot minor. My daughter used my 9 major and shot nimor and still won her class. Do not get caught up in this major/minor bull. It is very hard to beat a good shooter using a minor power factor. (Gee its been a long time and rules change so often, does IPSC still have major/minor power factors??? I'll have to look that up.) Go fast and shoot "A's". Do not worry about braking parts, these guns are plenty strong and can handle more than a 9 major could throw at it.

My CZ clone has a minimum of 80,000 9x21 major rounds on the same slide and frame, 20 grand last year alone. Still going strong. I believe The Great One uses a brand of 9x19 that makes major. As long as the gun is put together properly, they will last. Dansy will comment on the STInger.
 
I have shoot over 21k in my Stinger, I have tried pretty much all the ammo +P and regular 9x19 , and NONE does major PF in the 3.9" barrel of the STInger :eek: not a big surprise here....but it's very easy to load major if you reload, I have used about 5 different powders so far...many many bullets type...but again with the very short barrel....115 gr don't make 160PF with most powder....

If I was to buy another factory I would get the Trubor in 9mm seem to do well around here.....dont get me wrong the STInger is not a bad pistol, it got me from unclass to A in one year....if purchase for IPSC Open...:) you will have to reload.

Also on the STI factory site they recommend to load for PF 175 for break in all the OPEN Gun's....then about 170PF....

P9-TGO has a much longer barrel ;)

Why bother with 9mm major anyways? Yes, I know the whole major vs minor argument...BUT

If you shoot A's, there is no difference. Plus the lighter loads will make it easier to shoot. You could always shoot 9mm minor in Open for a year, learn to shoot your A's fast and accurately, and then rechamber for 38 super or 9x21 at a later date if you decide you're losing ground due to your C or D count.

I always thought I might try getting a 9mm minor gun for my gf if she showed an interest in IPSC and wanted to shoot Open.
 
Shooting minor with this gun......well you can if you want.... but it jump in minor load (like all OPEN Gun's) even with 115 gr bullet.... read my post again......STI Factory does recommend 170PF :)

My wife shoot the Edge in 40SW major...yes she's has a harder time then most men...hence the reason she will be switching to Open very soon..... ;)
 
The biggedt problem with 9mm major is the mags, they need to tuned and the spacers need to be put into run well.
As for breaking parts in a open gun that is normal for any ipsc gun. show me a ipsc shooter at a match that does not have enough spare parts in ther bag to rebuild a gun open or any other division.
the punishment that a gun get from 9mm major is no different the fron 38 super , 9x21 , 9x25

The stinger is a great gun if you want to shoot minor, in major loads the gun acts just like a standered gun with a red dot on it ( recoil is that not much diffrent then 40S&W in. dot will move out of the lens on every shoot.but the gun swings from target totarget fast.[ I now were you can get one realy cheap])
 
Quigley the up date is the gun has been done for 3 weeks sitting in dans safe waiting for paper work to come back from ATF. It is a 9mm major shorty it is the gun under my tag. can't wait to get it need to get ready for the upcomming season.
 
sorry explicent content getting of topic easy to do talking about a dan bedell gun if you ever get a chance to shoot one do it and you will know what i am talking about.

As fo for your original question if you do not want to reload get some winchester white box 9mm shoot the stinger in minor and lear to shoot all A's.

If I had it to do all ovet again I would have gon to a Dan Bedell gun first. The man builds the best gun i have ever shoot. I have shoot a lot of the top gun builders guns from the states ( brazos, millenium custom (derek is a great guy to deal with) dawson ) Dan is still the best. 2nd i would get the sti truebore from shawn at freedom ventures.
