So I am going to start reloading 9mm as from my calculations I can save about 7$ a box. I have all the equipment already except the dies. So I am wondering..

I know it is very hard to find powder but what are some of the powders I should be looking for to load 9mm?

Is there any advantage to loading hollow points, or should I just do round nose?

I will probably just go the store and grab some Hornady or RCBS dies unless you guys recommend something else.

Get some carbide dies, I use a lee set for 9mm. As to powder I did see hummasons with some in stock in 8lb jugs. The good thing about 9mm is that you have a wide variety of powders that will work. 231 / clays / unique / etc.

If you're punchin paper then hollow points or round nose or cast, they're all just gonna make holes.. Wad cutters cut cleaner holes, perhaps hollow points would as well. Very much not worth it to buy more expensive tips just to cut holes in paper though.. Also, I imagine wadcutters might not cycle in some guns so I'd just say go with round nose.

The powder to get for 9mm is any that you can find! Look at your manual(s), make a list and refer to it when at the store. It's usualy quicker to ask them what they have in stock than to ask for what you're looking for.

For your dies, you should consider LEE. That's all I use and all my ammo goes bang and is more acurate than factory.

As for bullet type, I usualy go for what's cheaper.

Hope this helps :)

Once you get in the game you'll find powder, primers and projectiles. As far as dies go I use RCBS, Lyman, and Lee. All good. Get carbide as you'll be loading thousands!

I use the RCBS 9mm and 10mm/40 cal carbide dies

Go through various manuals and online sites (powder makers) and see what powders they use for the bullet weights your looking at then go shopping and good luck.

I use W231, and have a can of Unique and a bottle of Trailboss should my W231 run out.

Many reloaders use the Berry's 124gr projectiles. I do myself, but am considering going to lead only.

And yes- carbide dies. Anything else is just masochism.

Adding to the powders mentioned above, I also recommend CFE Pistol powder. It is ball powder that feeds well, burns clean and gets good velocity (with 124 grain bullet).

Carbide die only. The brand really makes no difference.
HP's or any jacketed bullet are expensive to shoot regularly. Cast are far more reasonable. You won't be carrying the thing anyway.
My Inglis BHP shoots 121 Truncated Cones with Bullseye, reliably. Bullseye only because that's what I use for nearly everything.
Don't buy an 8 pound keg until you have worked up a load.

I'd check out budget shooter supply, one of our sponsors. Henry provides great service and pricing. He had Tite group powder in stock a week or so ago and also has a good selection of dies. I use the Lee die set for my 9mm and use either hp or Rn, whatever is cheaper at the moment.

I believe he is out of Tightgroup as it goes fast but you have to e-mail him for current stock..but great guy to deal with

Carbide dies are a must. I use RCBS and Lee. I think I prefer Lee.

Powder choice is a medium speed powder, like 231, Titegroup, Power Pistol, if youc an find them. I use Titegroup for all pistol loads that don't need max velocity.

A lead round nose bullet is cheap and effective. I use 135 gr LRN for all 9mm applications, typically with about 3.5gr of TiteGroup.

Yeah, I can't find any pistol powder anywhere though. Budget supplies has none, none of my LGS's have any.. this is lame.

That what I found , when I started reloading 9mm....when you find it .... Buy It!!! I think I was told awhile back that gun powder orders come "in" every 6 months. So buy it when you can. The more the merrier.
Cheers

words to live by. I was in the Lebaron store in Markham just after X-mas and looking for titegroup powder and the guy said none to be had. I have bought lots of rifle powder over the last year and other necessities for reloading and they have been good to me. As I was leaving he said, what to heck I have two pounds on hold and the guy who had it on hold has known it has been waiting for him since well before X-mas, you want it it is yours, guess what I said?

So I phoned Del Selin and they had a few lbs of W231 so I went and bought a couple lbs. Fromwhat I've read people have had good luck with it so gonna give it a try.
