9mm vs. 45ACP

Well... The debate was ended for me when this question was posed to me, "which would you rather stand in front of"? I replied "neither" he looked me in the eye, said "Smart lad" and moved on with his day.

I don't care what caliber it is, and neither will any of the wounding mechanisms that shut the human body down.

Isn't that like saying "Getting punched by a 130 lb, grade 8, boy is the same as getting one from a a 250 lb college kid" ? Merely a physic's matter, no?

My Dad did a job in Egypt years ago in the early 80s. At the hotel he stayed at there was a heavily armed security presence and during the time that he was there he made friends with the head of security. They got to talking about guns (where do you think I got the gun-nuttery from?) and the security man (an Egyptian) was maligning the 38 revolver he was carrying instead of his 45 ACP. He explained how it was nearly impossible to obtain 45 ammo and that he would be much rather be carrying the 45. A couple of days later Dad happened upon a couple of US Air Force guys that were serving in the area and inquired how hard it would be to find a couple of cases of 45 hardball. In short order they produced the ammo and Dad was very well treated for the rest of his stay by the Security Chief.

Granted, that was in the early 80s (might even have been 1980) and ammo technology has improved immensely since then, but given all the givens, a man under very real threat of having a very bad day, wanted ammo for his 45 ACP. Makes sense to me.

My guess is more prestige was attached to the 45 than to what was likely an old British 38 S&W.

I like loading 45ACP mags more than 9mm- big fingers :)

If I was carrying I would prefer a small 9mm with more capacity than carrying a big 45 pistol.

I had a similar conversation with a guy who told me that the Ruger 10/22 I was shooting was a girl's gun, whatever that means. When I offered to let him catch a Stinger to show off how manly he was he was all for it. Guy seriously wanted me to shoot him in the leg with a high velocity 22 round to prove the point that he was totally sure of. When my buddy pointed out that the IDF stopped using this gun because it was killing too many people to be called a non-lethal alternative he said we were BSing him because the .22 LR is a useless calibre... There are a lot of seriously uneducated people out there. I shoot 9mm because it's a lot cheaper and I've seen broken 1911s at every course I've attended while the 9mm and 40 Glocks just keep shooting... The funny thing is that I read a US crime stat that claimed that more people had been shot and killed with 22LR than any other calibre.

Factual and entertaining.

I like the 45 ACP and 1911's for reasons of nostaglia primarily. It's also a very economical combination with some of the Norincos that are readily available, and in those guns, you can handload to 45 Super-460 Rowland pressures and move the 230's along at 1300+ fps if you're so inclined and don't mind the recoil.

In SHTF my 45s will stays in the safe. Have to agree with vid I've way better calibers for self defense.

Punching paper nothing beats BIG HOLES.
