UPDATE: June 1 - due to ongoing interest, we've opened up a couple of slots for this event. Only a couple though.

To acknowledge the milestone anniversaries of the Great and Second World Wars, and building on the successful Ross Rifle event in 2013, another vintage battle rifle shoot will take place this year – once again on the Alberta Fullbore Rifle Association (AFRA) 900-metre range at the Alberta Provincial Rifle Association (APRA) Homestead shooting facility west of Calgary.

Lee Enfields, of course, as well as Ross rifles and any other military long arm, 1945 or earlier, welcome.

This two-day event will take place June 28 and 29, 2014. 100, 200 and 300/400 metres.

More information to follow shortly

I would very much be into that.

It would be worth the humiliating trouncing my "skills" would take just to see some of the great shooters in the community show how it's really done, and see some great rifles while I'm at it.

Will it be open to non members?

Event details

Okay, here's the full story on the shoot.

2014 marks several significant anniversaries, not the least of which is the start of the Great War. To acknowledge these significant moments in our history, and building on the successful Ross Rifle event in 2013, another vintage battle rifle shoot will take place this year – once again on the Alberta Fullbore Rifle Association (AFRA) 900-metre range at the Alberta Provincial Rifle Association (APRA) Homestead shooting facility west of Calgary, and under their auspices.

Several classes of rifle are eligible for this event. Prizes will be awarded but a big focus of this event is to just hang out, have some fun, and talk about our rifles.

Plan on 100 rounds per rifle. That will give you enough to cover your needs for the full course of fire with some left over for any offers of "hey, do you want to try out my rifle?" you might make. There was a fair bit of that last year, so extra rounds for new friends who have never fired a Ross/Gew 98/Springfield 1903 wouldn't go astray.;)

Will anyone be offended if I shoot poorly with an SVT ? Not intentionally poorly, mind you, just that's the way it will likely go. I'm willing to pay the $25 and look like a duffer just to be able to see some of the good shooters and all the gear. And meet a few people, of course.

D-BOMB. Whatever you can make would be great. Saturday is for sighting and Sunday for score and a push a bit further out. Both will be entertaining days based on last year.

Greimar. We don't judge. A lot of rifles last year were at the range for the first time with their current owners, so time spent setting them up.

And that, right there, is why I'd rather hang with gunners than golfers any day of the week.

I haven't even been on a range that has over 200 yard targets in almost 4 decades. If I can see a target that far away I would sure love to give it a shot. I gotta see if I can work this one in. How about a prize for anybody over 60 that shoots in the right direction :)

I'm tempted to take a K31 or one of my SVT-40s, scoped or not, just for ####s and giggles. I'm more interested in what kinds of other historical pieces others have than my own ability to put shots accurately downrange. Especially as a younger fella.
