A COUPLE OF SLOTS AVAIL: Vintage Battle Rifle Shoot - west of Calgary: June 28 and 29

Signed up. Looking forward to it. I held myself down to 2 rifles and a back up. An LB #4, a P14 and maybe a #1 mk3*.
Hope to meet a lot of you guys there.

Tremendous event. Last year I used a P14 and Lithgow No. 1 Mk3. Had never shot on a proper range like that with guys raising and lowering the targets. Shooting the No. 1 at 400m was a real eye-opener (in a good way). This year I'm going to bring a scoped SVT and I hope there might be another few sniper type rifles there for a little friendly competition.

In response to the recent queries here about eligibility...

First off, and at the risk of being seen as a buzzkill, the M1918 BAR is a no-go for the shoot, I'm afraid. We're trying to keep the arcs, as you described them, Recce21, a little more narrowed focused on battle rifles vintage or modern.

I'll try to define the arcs a bit here. Vintage battle rifle means a bolt action or semi-auto battle rifle of a model developed, and used, prior to 1945, in its original military calibre. As examples, the SVT-40 and Garand are in, but the FN-49 is out. A 1950 Long Branch C No.4 is in, as would be a 1960 POF No. 4. If you want to bring an M 71/84 Mauser, all good. Any sights beyond those originally slapped on the rifle at the factory will move you into the diopter/scope class - that would include the various Parker-Hale and similar sights commonly affixed to Enfields. Last year we had Ross rifles of many flavours, Enfields, also of many flavours, a Mosin sniper, and a Garand.

There is also, this year, as seen in the event notice, a "modern" battle rifle class, which will give those with, as examples, an M1A or AR-platform rifle a shot.

If you have something cool/unique that falls outside the arcs to shoot, but you want to bring it so people can take a close look at it, that would be great.

Hope this helps a bit.

All the guys with ARs at the POCo range shoot at 50 yards or less. Will you have a special event for that class :)

No offense, but that sounds like a BAR to me.

If one of those shows up, I'd be more than happy to line up next to it. I want to see how accurate a BAR is. And being next to any automatic barking is a comforting place to be. If my schedule stays open I'm making the trip. This sounds fantastic.

Or for the guys who only ever shoot their AR's in climate controlled indoor ranges, and blather on endlessly about how reliable the platform is? :nest:

(couldn't resist)

p.s. I'll be there with my 1940 Tula SVT-40, I'm sure the AR guys will have lots better luck with reliability/accuracy than I will, but we'll both get to geek out about our "drop free" mags.

I'm not going to get into a debate about how we individually might define specific firearms and, therefore whether they have been unjustly excluded.

We have an opportunity to bring our milsurps out to a well-equipped range where we can stretch our rifles and skills out to up to 400 metres with scored targets and target pullers - a range normally available only to members of the organization which administers that range. If that means some firearms don't make the cut, okay, they don't make the cut.

Let's not get hung up on what isn't allowed. We had a great event last year, and this year's event will be equally enjoyable, I'm sure, with a wide variety of rifles on hand and a chance to make some new acquaintances with fellow milsurp shooters.

Actually I signed up should be fun.

I have a "noobish" question though.

How does one go about using a chamber flag on a AG42B? Closing the action on the flag will make a mess of the flag? Or can the action be left open with the flag installed?
My range does not mandate chamber flags so I'm unsure.

I`d love to bring a Mauser.

So would I, if I can get my hands on some ammo!!!! 8mm Mauser ammo is somewhat scarce (an understatement) around Calgary. If anyone has a source I'd love to hear about it!

If I cant find any Mauser ammo, it looks like I'll be bringing my new (to me :p) K31 and either the Noisy Maggot or SVT. At least those I have ammo for!!! :D:D:D

Signing up as soon as I'm off CGN.

If I end up coming, I may be able to help you out.
I have at least 100 rounds of Port Non Corrosive. Just need to find it.

Will spectators be allowed?
How does one go about using a chamber flag on a AG42B?

Spectators are welcome. They'll need eye and ear protection. They should also plan on bringing all the non-firearm related bits listed on the event notice:

•Food and beverage: Bring your own lunch, snacks, and bottled water
•Hats, sunscreen and bug repellant recommended

And based on registrations and inquiries thus far, we're going to be shooting in flights, so might be an idea for everyone - shooters and spectators alike - to bring a lawn chair.

As for flags, their purpose is to easily confirm that a firearm is unloaded and the action open, and prevent the action from closing. They're orange or yellow, and can be found through a variety of sources (Amazon for example).

So, getting worked up for the shoot, I find that I am down to my last box of 174 gn 303 bullets for reloading.AAARRRRGGGGHHHH!!!
Not one store in Vancouver has any, Budget is out, Tradex is out, can't find any. I have knowen that there was a shortage but it never hit me till now. I can get 150 gn but would have to re-calibrate for 400 yards. The hunt is on.

Is the modern rifle class military rifles, i.e. As issued rifles, or can guys slap on a 24x scope on an AR?
