a few cats from this guiding season

Doug; Very nice pictures!! Awesome cats, indeed!!
srupp obviously regards you highly...this is good to see.
To the poster [now banned] who suggested that using dogs to tree the big cats is unethical...take a hike!!
I am past retirement age, and have spent literally thousands of hours in the BC woods where the big cats are common.
During that time, I have actually seen cougars on 3 occasions [yes, only 3]
On one, I had enough time to shoot. The others were so much like ghosts that I had to look at the tracks to be sure they had actually been there.
Tracks...common to see...the cats themselves, not so much.
I have also been along on a couple of hunts in the shuswap.
Following those dogs is truly tough slogging.
Congrats, and keep up the good work.
Eagleye.

Brave dog in those pictures. I'm of the mindset that hunting pressure on any of the big predators helps to keep them afraid of people. People and livestock still (abeit very rarely) get attacked and I get a warm fuzzy feeling every time I hear of someone putting the hounds on the run for cats. Thanks for sharing!

f:P: Wasn't trying to be rude.. Was just wondering how its done.

How can i big cougar like the ones in those pictures not out run a dog in deep snow? Those cougars have legs twice the size of those dogs.

Instincts. A cougar can easily outrun them but after getting sniffed out a few times after outrunning, it's easier to hang out in a tree and wait for them to lose interest and go away. They see dogs and people as a threat but don't exactly understand the whole gun from the ground thing. Really hard to understand just how much determination and stamina some of those dogs have without seeing them work. It's absolutely amazing what they're willing to do with some training/conditioning.

What in the world?... How do they do that...

I've guided hound hunts for bears just north of Sault Ste. Marie, ON and it was 1000x more exciting than sitting on your butt in a tree stand or any other hunt I've been on.

I think we should have a new rule where you should have to apply for Hunting access just like Off Topics access. That way when AZZhats start criticizing other's hunting methods (dogs, baiting, crossbows) we can ban them from Hunting but they still have access to the rest of CGN and the EE so they can still buy knitting needles and such from the EE.

Thanks for sharing the pics, they are pretty cool.

I agree 100%

Dave.

Absolutely amazing pictures, thanks for sharing.

I had a very close encounter with a Cougar while camping a couple years ago. Scared the #### out of me to say the least. Majestic and scary all rolled into one. Good thing I surprised it because if it had been stalking me I would have been in for a hell of a fight. My 12g was 200 yards away back in camp.

I think that these hounds are the most fortunate comparing to all those begals living in the city and never get to do what they were breed to do. I can't believe how big those are.

True dat. I know they aren't supposed to be able to see in colour, but the deer hounds we use can definatly tell what hunter orange looks like in greyscale, cause they go nuts when they see the coat.

Also how the hell does your dog do this one
