A few questions about my first 10/22 build

Just about to order most of the parts for my first 10/22 build, but I have a few questions for the more experienced 10/22 tinkerers here.

Kidd vs SBI bolt. These are my options. The Kidd is $40 more. SBI has hinted that their bolt is made by a company in the USA who makes bolts for a few brands. I'm not sure if it's Kidd or someone else. Any experiences you might have with either, or comparing them would be very helpful.

Magazine latch plunger. Is this part worth replacing with aftermarket stainless? If I remember correctly the Ruger factory part is painted, which I hate as it eventually flakes.

Action screw. Does it matter if it's stainless or blued carbon steel?

Thanks

Kidd works very well; they're the premium supplier. But so long as the ammo feeds into battery and extracts properly and all the SBI does the job too. I think the barrel and optic (and solid alignment between them) and having a good trigger group would be the key things to look at.

The magazine plunger is hidden where you only see it if you turn the rifle over, so I wouldn't agonize over its appearance. Granted, SBI has that ultra-lightweight chassis that has the magwell open to the sides but even then the plunger is on the back side where you're unlikely to have to look at it.

I haven't ran a kidd bolt as I usually run the volquartsen when I can find them. I think they are a better bolt with the firing pin set up and the bolted on bolt handle. I also run a tacsol receiver for that reason as I think the dual plunger, and firing pin set up are far superior. I can't show you or prove that, but I feel they run better.

I wouldn't worry about the plunger as much as adjusting it. I usually take it apart and file a bit of the nub on the release, so the plunger sits out a tad further. I found this hold the mags a bit better and more consistent and does not interfere with dropping out the mags. I usually file my mags in the areas that they seem to catch so when I release them the drop out. Nothing more annoying than having to fiddle with that mag in there.

I usually take the receivers and run 1000 grit with oil in there just to smooth out the surfaces a tad. Again I find them just running smoother.

What are the other parts you are running?

Thanks for the replies.

I was planning to buy the following parts:

- Dlask TUF-22 receiver (w/adjustable v-block)
- Kidd bolt
- Ruger BX trigger pack
- Dlask charging handle kit
- Dlask bolt release
- Dlask magazine lever plunger (w/heavy spring)
- Dlask action screw
- Dlask receiver pins
- tuffer buffer
- Magpul x22 Hunter stock

- barrel... 12" or 16.5" heavy profile, brand undecided (likely green mountain or SBI)

I'm not looking for an ultra premium build as I want to keep the cost within reason. Please feel free to criticize any parts selections here if any are subpar or if there are better parts for the same price.

One thing I'm a bit concerned about is the barrel tenon not fitting in the tight Dlask receiver. I refuse to sand anything. I'll heat the receiver a bit, freeze the barrel and use anti-seize compound, but won't sand or file anything. The thought makes me cringe.

Buy reasonable priced factory barrels to start
They all see to fit most aftermarket receivers
The receiver manufacturer will tell you what fits without issues

Better get on those dlask parts as I heard they’re gonna be closing their doors when the owner is back from vacation.

Yeah that why I'm asking all this now. Dlask going out of business pushed me to finally put through my order.

Regarding the list of 10/22 parts above, are there any that you guys with experience would say that SBI makes better than Dlask?

If you're going for the Dlask receiver in order to use the 25 round mags the SBI receivers also have the cutout to fit them.

The Dlask receiver is thicker and heavier than the SBI ones. It's a tank. Depends on what you prefer. The SBI receiver can be had with a top side "AR syle" charging handle which is pretty cool.

I would skip on the Magpul stock... I have one and don't like it. A Chassis is nicer. They're modular, lighter and you can choose any grip, stock and accessories you like to put on there.

Depending on what the gun will be used for be careful which barrel you choose. Some match chambers won't work with hypervelocity ammo like Stingers and Velocitors. SBI's barrels will not accept them. I don't know if that matters to you or if you just want to shoot match ammo 🤷‍♂️

Just some food for thought.

I currently own

7 Dlask, 8 SBI, 2 Tacsol, 2 VQ, and a large number of Ruger Receivers if you mixed and match these receivers to various after market barrels, bolts, stocks, scopes and ammo
I seriously doubt most shooters would be able to obtain a meaningful performance difference.

Form and function for the particular rifle trump any differences within the various manufacturers.

Build, shoot lots of different ammo with a decent rest and quality scope. Most of all have fun

Thanks for the reply. I'm mostly look to stick to 10 round mags since I've read in many reviews, and have been told that 25rd commonly cause feeding issues. Also the Dlask mags are all sold out so they're not really a consideration. I'm more drawn to the Dlask receiver due to the strength of the 7075 aluminum. I just like the idea, but not if it's going to be way bulkier and heavier. Do you prefer the SBI receiver over the Dlask? I'm always a fan of saving money so I'd be open to being talked out of the Dlask receiver if there are drawbacks.

Edit: Just looked it up. Apparently the Dlask receiver is 500g vs the SBI @ 220g. That's a huge difference.

I saw that SBI uses match blanks with Bentz chambers which aren't Stinger friendly, however Velocitors use standard overall dimensions like a normal .22LR round.

I want to build one 10/22 with the x22 hunter and another with a chassis. I really don't know which chassis though. I find the SBI g3 chassis really hard to look at. I don't like it at all. Doesn't leave a lot of other quality options for chassis.

Like 357maximum said the receiver won't make a big difference. It just depends on what you want.

The Dlask receiver is a tank and pretty heavy. More for a heavy PRS or bench gun in my opinion.

I bought an SBI ST-22 for the build I'm working on because I liked the top charging handle. They sell traditional side charging receivers too.

Can't go wrong with either.

A chassis will typically have an inline stock, which is wonderful for all the recoil coming straight back into your shoulder with no muzzle rise (minimal in 22LR anyway) and will need a high-mounted scope to go with where that puts your eyeline.

Traditional iron sights, or something like a low-mounted red dot, go with a traditional stock that provides some drop in order to put your eye that low.

Just a couple of things that need to be considered together designing a rifle. Both styles are good to have!

Thanks for all the input so far.

Does anyone know if Dlask's shipping includes insurance? I can't get a hold of them and I don't want to put through a large order without it.
