a good moose gun?

a good advice would be to take him to the range and have him shoot a magnum caliber. Only then he can make an informed decision.
if you guys are in the GTA you are welcome to come over to my club in Cambridge and try my gun.

That's an even better idea!
No point on having him shell out the money on something that might possibly cause him to flinch and regret it after,Good point "mrefaat"

Can someone tell me which is a powerful moose gun? I only have a 30-06 for now, but would like to get one with a little more "kick"! Anyone have a favorite?

There's nothing in North America you can't hunt with the 30-06. If there is, then SHOW ME THE WAY BROTHER!!!!:D

Seriously, the 30-06 has been around for 100 years for that very reason.

Anything less than a .416 rigby and you will be undergunned!:p

9.3x62, .350 mag, .35 whelen, tough to beat those medium bores. or go for a big bore lever in 444, 45-70 or a ruger .405. lots of good choices out there, but the most practical would be the medium bores such as the .350.

The 300 magnum gives you about 600 ft/lbs more energy, and about 50 yards more useable range, but there is also an increase in recoil to the tune of about 35-40%. More power is always a trade of for either a heavier rifle, or more recoil.

Personally, I have used the '06 on some large moos, and never found it to be lacking. I have also used the 300 magnum, and it is a fine cartridge as well. Had I to choose one, as I grow older, it would be the '06. With a 168 TSX or a 180 Partition at good velocity, game just flat lays down and dies.

I also have a 45-70 and a 405. The 405 in a 9 pound rifle still comes back pretty good. Ten rounds off the bench is enough to get your attention. My wife killed her first moose with a 243, and it did the job with a 95 gr X at 40 yards, but that is a use what you got gun, not one I would buy for moose.

My vote is for the 30-06 with good bullets and lots of practice for shot placement.

I'd actually put the 35 whelen as the next logical step between '06 and 338 WM.

338 Federal also looks quite interesting, and I'm disappointed that the 358 didn't fare better

a 338 Ultra slingin' 250 grain Partitions would be one hell of a moose gun, which would satisfy your craving for 'kick' and more ;)

The great old 30/06 is all you will ever need. Just look at the one of the greatest moose masher of all time in Canada... the .303 British. More moose have been killed with this caliber than any other. And it is inferior to the 30/06 on paper!

Magnums are not really needed anywhere in Canada. Most standard calibers will do the job perfectly well, with less fuss and alot less powder and recoil.

Don't get all caught up with paper ballistics. Dead is dead ;)

O.K. serious Moose guns start at .375 and go up. What better excuse is there for owning big guns? Actually Elk take more killing than Moose. The 06 will work for anything in Canada so you may as well go to something big.

Buy a 30-06 and hunt and kill any animal in North America. Having an arsenol which will enable you to hunt a particular animal with a particular caliber is nothing more than a marketing scheme to seperate you from your money.;) The rifle companies hire some pretty high profile dignitaries to wave their flag and flog their wares.
