a good moose gun?

Yeah, maybe true if all you're interested in is hunting. But this is Canadian GUN nutz, not Canadian Hunting nutz.

So, by all means, get many guns.

I like the .338's in any form for Moose. I figure if he has a 30/06 already you might as well step up to .338 or .358! I have used the 338 WinMag and the 338/06 for moose. Both worked well. My current 338 is a 338/08. I like this one the most. Lots of thump without too much recoil. I like this one so much its my only hunting rifle at the moment:)

The great old 30/06 is all you will ever need. Just look at the one of the greatest moose masher of all time in Canada... the .303 British. More moose have been killed with this caliber than any other. And it is inferior to the 30/06 on paper!

Magnums are not really needed anywhere in Canada. Most standard calibers will do the job perfectly well, with less fuss and alot less powder and recoil.

Don't get all caught up with paper ballistics. Dead is dead ;)

Who cares about need? If I want to I could get a firearm to suit every situation of hunting and some just because I want them! Need has nothing to do with it.
I have a 505 Gibbs! a 'monster masher' dating to 1912 and designed to stop a Cape Buffalo or a elephant in it's tracks. Not many of them in and around Terrace!!
I don't need it but I want it!!

If he wants a 300 Win mag, so what he can have it! Just learn to shoot it!

Thanks again for all the very informative information fellas!! I think he has his heart set now on the .300 mag. I found out he is not interested in the 30.06 anymore due to the fact he uses it for his "deer" gun and now just wants a "moose" gun!! Well I say if you have the money, spend it on guns!! Thanks again everyone! I on the other hand do not need a bigger gun, but rather thicker eye glasses to see 'em first!!:D

Maybe suggest that the '06 become his moose gun, and he look at a 260 or somesuch as a deer gun.

Not that I have anything against magnums, in fact, I rather like them. But it sounds like your friend wants one simply because it has the word 'magnum' in it. How's he at handling the '06? Maybe give him a 'flinch test' - hand him a cocked gun, but don't tell him whether you loaded a cartridge or not. If he has a flinch problem, it'll be readily apparent, and he might want to reconsider his magnum fixation

Dear Gibba505, You apear to be in interesting person. I would like to have the opertunity to meat you. Maby at the range do a little shooting. maby it sounds like I I'm a 7mm person. I'm not Though I do like it. I do have thim all. 7mm,300w. 3006. 308.223. And more. Thanks for talking to me by.

How about a good 35 Whelen? It has all the "punch" needed for moose, is accurate and doesn't kill your shoulder.
But if you're looking for a "manly" gun, just buy a .460 Weatherby; it will kill your moose flat and also do the occasional groundhog (and your skinny little brother-in-law if he tries it). But it isn't my idea of an everyday "plinker"...

I'm not a fan of 'the bigger is better' caliber theory, although many years ago I hunted moose with a lightweight 243, since i tend to walk a lot in the bush. One year I shot a nice 4 year old three times at 150 yds and he didn't go down! So my father figured I had missed him completly, and drops him with his 7mm.

Only when we got him hung up did we find the three little holes in his neck, all within a 4" circle. Thats when I bought my 264 win mag. Now I use a single shot 45-70 with iron sights.

But if you really want a light caliber, we hunted with some natives in the Green Lake area many years ago, and one guy hunted with 22 shorts! When I asked him why he only used shorts, he replied "long rifle too expensive" :D

Not that I would ever use it on a moose, but I know many many people who would only use a .243 for moose. It is the smallest cartridge we are allowed to use in NL. I was just throwing that fact out there. However, I did watch an older gentleman drop and nice bull at approx 200 yards with his .243. Small hole through the heart. It can be done...I would never do it.

Moose gun

The 30-06 is indeed a versatile chambering. You can use 150 sp's for deer and up to the Barnes original 250 grain for the Moose. I believe the 180 grain and up would be suitable for moose. I have some Sierra Gameking 200's with a good dose of IMR 4350 say 50gr would flatten a moose real quick. I used a .308 WIN with factory 150gr Rem Corlocts on a nice moose this past season and results were similar to the two Mulie Bucks that dropped to the same load/ rifle combo, great accuracy and terminal performance. Deer, Moose tailor the loads to suit the game. Long live the 06'. Regards

.338WM is about all you'll ever need for Moose.
.243 well that is a little light I think... I have seen deer shake off 100 grain bullets.

If they "shook it off", it was from a poor shot not lack of gun.

I have yet to shoot a moose, however, if and when i get the chance, i would like to think that my 270 with premium bullets will do the job,in the right place of course, with minimal recoil and get the job done.
Why the hell would anyone want MORE kick than required
If KICK is what you want, just go buy the biggest kicking gun that you can afford and shoot the heaviest loads and go shoot paper targets and forget the hunting (in case you develop a flinch and then wound the animal)
Is this 'BIG KICK' a new thing in hunting, OR a new hunter to 'Hunting" ???
Big kicking guns kill animals deader !
