A good Varmint rifle.

You used the "varmint" word. Most of what is being advised is exactly that: Varmint Rigs. However your brother leaning towards a 30-30 makes me think he may just want something that is a convenient Acerage/farm gun for whatever comes around. You say you are into high powered military, so how about an SKS. Cheap, easy to maintain, cheap ammo, can be scoped if he wants.

Heh, honestly I've done exactly that. He's pretty interested in them right now. For all he wants, scope and all would be about $450, and that's with a crate of ammunition. Trying to find other rifles for cheap and they all come out to near that price for the gun alone.

Only trick is finding him an easy source of Softpoint rounds for when he decides to take deer. FMJs fine for popping the small stuff, but not so much for big.

Well ya'd lose that bet leadslinger, for one of my recent birthdays she bought me this;

Sorry for the hijack;)

Yes, soft points are harder to come by for the SKS, but most of the "varmint" calibers that are being touted here are to small for deer. Neither the 22-250, or my own .223 are legal to hunt with. Better to pay $30 for a box of soft points from wholesale and have a rifle he can use for everything than a dedicated "varmint" rig that he can't use for hunting legally at all.(other than varmints)

I agree with the stevens, or a cheap bolt with a scope. If he wants to shoot deer too, I'd go with a 243. The sks is a good cheap gun, but you'll be stuck with open sights. I haven't had any luck with scope's on an sks, the plate they mount to move around after awhile.

Dedicated varmint rigs = often more of a set-up-and-shoot scenario....?

30-30 lever gun = perhaps more of a walking around firearm for the ranch/farm?

In the latter case, (don't laugh) perhaps a mini-14 would do.

no,
i was referring to the use of the nice furniture to place your rifles on
to take the photo's.
I cant even take one foot off carpet at my door with clean shoes on,
let alone place anything like a firearm on one of our (yeh right) coffee tables.
If this is not the case at your place,
then man, if you have not done so already, Marry this woman, she is a keeper!

Except that my brother is looking for something CHEAP, heh.

I'm thinking his term wasn't quite correct for what he meant - Since he also intend to drop deer, I can only think he was looking for something with more power than a souped-up gopher rig.

A general-purpose Farm Gun would be about right. Something tough, reasonably powerful and versatile. So far the SKS is winning the race with him, except the difficulty in finding the SP ammunition.

I get it now, my lady can be a bit fussy too but not ridiculous about it.

Since when is it illegal to hunt with either of these cartridges? I know in BC it is 100% legal to hunt deer with a .223.

Not legal to hunt big game in Alberta with anything smaller than .240.

So bump that Stevens (or Remington or cheap Weatherby or Marlin bolt) up to a .25-06 and go to town.

Sorry guys. I've only hunted in Sask and Alta and out here anything under .23 is not legal for big game. 762Russian is from Alta, so I'm assuming his brother is as well. Another Milsurp that he could look at is the M-305, a little pricier and not as handy. BUT if you really want a cheap all-around farm gun, I don't know if you can beat an old .303. Where I come from they are almost standard issue with a farm/acreage. You can still find them for under $200. you can use open sights or mount a scope. Fibreglass monte-carlo stock fot about $100 from ATI. You can even have the barrel shortened to 20" so it's handier and still get out to 200 yards. Ammo is a little pricey, but no problem with soft point. It can take a coyote that in the corral, but it works good for moose as well.

204,223,22-250,243,25-06,257Wby!!!! 223 being the most economical besides the described SKS which will work but not my choice for Varmints. My personel Favorite is the 22-250 but it cost more to shoot but if you have a pile a cash I love my 257Wby which doubles as a big game rifle!!! Retep.
