i'm not really experienced with M14 rifles, but about a year ago I bought a M14 shorty rifle/ammo package and aside from cleaning it and sighting it in, I have done nothing to it. I'm getting ready to start working on it, and I want to get it to shoot under 2 MOA, as a goal but I would like to get it as accurate as possible so I hope it is possible to get it shooting 1 - 1 1/5 MOA (but I would be happy with 2 MOA, and seemd like a realistic goal)
As I have been readinh sticky's & threads, it seems like the first thing that is done for increasing M14 accuracy is a new op guide rod, and shim/tighten the gas system. I was wondering if anyone sells a "M14 accuracy kit" that would include a guide rod, shims, and maybe other easy/cheap updrades that would improve the accuracy ?
If no such kit exists, what would be the best upgrades to do first, and best place to buy the parts ?
I know the cheap flimsy stock should be replaced, but I think I will try to make it more rigid & bed the original stock first to see if it works okay, since I do not want to spend $800 on a chassis.

Read on the subject, decide which parts you want, hit treelinem14.com and start filling your shopping cart. The hardest part is waiting.

So Momma........you filling in for Frank ?
Just kidding :)
OP......Just take it one step at a time .
Get to a clinic if you can. If not pull that sucker apart read the stickies and rebuild accordingly. Huge gains to be had right there.
You might not even need to shim, just flip the gas lock 180 degrees, it works for many many of these guns.
Hockey night trigger job never hurts.
After all this get some benchmark groups.
Then and only then start shopping for an OR spring guide.
Then get some more groups....
Then try a wide variety of ammo, your gun might be far different to the next one with the same load.
Get some more groups..........
And then like most of the rest of us......buy some reloading gear, awesome results to be had :)
Then you can get into the stock mods, bedding job, reinforcing the fore stock etc, front ferrule job.
Can you see why these guns are so much fun :) Tinker away all day long, but ONE STEP at a time so you know what happens after each tinker.
Or you could just spend a whole bunch of money on a fancy stock ( and a stock doesn't include grips ,buffer tube, butt stock and shouder tingy that goes up )and still be shooting 3 inches.

Which ever way you decide to go, you can be certain of one thing.
We got your back and will help out any way we can.
And beware of anything " Tactical "

Have fun :)

I am new to M14's too - just bought an M1A...and I need to ask a question about Blue's question - is accuracy like that even possible out of a Norc for under $800.00? Seems to me that precision and 'cheap' are mutually exclusive terms...

There are a lot of Norcs out there now way under 2 inches, but I have to say most of these guys are reloading.
The misnomer about the Norcs is that they are ALL ####e simply because of the price.........wrong.
They are an excellent platform to build on, indeed they really are the turd that needs polishing.
Myself, since I found a good working load, I haven't shot a group over 2.25 inches ( including the flyer) and hover around 1.5 inches now and then.
PR859 has had some amazing results as have many others.
Im not going to bash M1A's, they are a fine rifle, but a GOOD Norc will match them on the range and may even embarrass a few pple.

So Im afraid the answer to your question is YES, it is entirely possible that there are Norcs out there that can shoot nicentight .
Cheers
Derek

Congrats on the M1A........nice.

check out m14forum.com. Its US based but the people there are very knowledgeable about the M14/M1a platform. the M305s in my family all shoot extremely well for basically stock rifles. I personally recommend that you look into getting a GI fiberglass stock for yours. That stock is slimmer than the Norc plastics making the rifle feel better in the hands, also that little mod can give you tighter groups over a wood stock. Now that may be because most of the wood stocks for these rifle aren't properly bedded. My dad did that to his Norc and cut his groups from 4 inches at 100 down to a little over 2 inches.

I am surprised Barney (Hungry now Tactical Teacher) hasn't chime it yet.

I am too suggested anyone interested in this platform attend his clinic because he knows these rifles inside out and know what's work and what doesn't to save you money.

Norinco M14s: $500

Aftermarket accessories: hundreds if not thousands dollars

Barney's advice: priceless (lol)

Brownells is a good supplier as well, especially now that ITAR limit has been raised. I recently got an order from them. Just remember you're going to have to pay a customs guy $10 to charge you 5% GST.

The TacticalTeacher formerly known as Hungry has some parts and odds and ends as well.

Upgrades, in no particular order:

new op rod spring guide
tighten op rod guide
shim gas system
unitize gas system
better stock
glass bedding
reload
