A Modern (hunter) update

Looks as though I missed some of this thread last night and posts have been removed....is it ok to ask about my remembering of a statement of .5 to .75 inch accuracy potential?

...from the pics it looks like it has the potential, from a lead sled, with hand loaded ammo and $2k worth of glass...

I don't think the lead sled and 2K scope is required but better ammo wouldn't hurt! I really like the rifle, I'm sure we will see a lot more groups being posted as more of the rifles are delivered....also I'm really hoping to see it averaging less than 1 MOA :)

You didn't offend me... I can't speak for the rest but I appreciate you spending your hard earn money and providing us those results.

I've shot sub moa groups from my 12 inch AR with an Elcan Specter DR and a sandbag, the only thing this rifle needs is to find the right ammo and shoot on a calm day. All those other things are just a crutch for people who don't shoot well.
Sure, more magnification makes it easier as does a rest that doesn't require any shooter input other than to pull the trigger but in my opinion the results we got using off the shelf crap ammo that for the most part cost $20 per box were really good.

One thing to note here was that we tried quite a few types of ammo that had soft lead tips and almost all of them gave us problems with them refusing to reliably run up the feed ramps, this distorted the tip pretty badly and most of the time we would just clear the stoppage and hand feed that round in then slap the mag in and continue shooting.
The FMJ rounds and the bullets with polymer tips all fed 100% reliably.

Considering this rifle made similar groups to my AR-10 that has a 16 inch Rainier Arms ultra-match barrel with cheap factory ammo tells me there is a lot of potential in this rifle. We should have tried the Black Hills match ammo I had but I only had 5 rounds of 175 and 5 rounds of 168 grain left so we skipped it since it would have thrown off our game which was loser buys lunch.

As usual this thread has a few posts from guys trying to discredit the rifle either out of their dislike for ATRS or the more common CGN types that can't afford it so they try to find fault to justify not buying one. We see it all the time, yes it's expensive, it's very expensive but it costs what it costs and if you don't like it there is always a more affordable XCR-M out there for you.
I was skeptical but after getting my hands on one and shooting it I think ATRS has a great rifle with some awesome design features. I love the way they designed it with no rear take down pin and how it was replaced internally.
The only thing I wasn't completely impressed with was the charging handle, it's a great design but either it needs to loosen up a little or needs a stronger spring to hold it folded as I noticed a couple times after last round when the rifle locked back that the charge handle wasn't in the fully forward and locked position. This had absolutely no effect on anything, it was just something I noticed that could have been a little better but will probably correct itself with a little more use when the pivot loosens up a little.

I appreciate the time and effort you guys put in to give us a peak at the performance and your guys thoughts on the rifle. I'll be doing the same when I get mine regardless of other people biased & unbiased opinions as it is the internet and you have to put up with the morons in order to hear from good people.

I have received multipleinfractions due to this thread and my support of atrs, I'll be removing all content and no more updates.

This is unfortunate, Storm.
The rifle looks awesome. Don't let "the sisters" bring you down, they're not worth it.
Please reconsider "no more updates", there's more of us than there are of them.
Cheers
Paul

Ps, I know where their firing line is. I'm going to eat some chili and pay it a visit :).

my comment was just intended to take human factor out of it, I shoot my Savage 10TR into half inch groups at 100 so figure I am an OK shot at least. I just know that from what I've seen from manufacturers claims for accuracy will be from a fixed position like a lead sled and they will only shoot 3 shots instead of your 5 because there is a better chance of a smaller group with fewer rounds. Since this is such an "inbetween" gun it's hard to get everyone on the same page. It's touted as being the "Modern Hunter" which implies it's a hunting rifle where 1" is perfectly acceptable, but then it's described as being based on an AR10 and a "black rifle" which 1.5" wouldn't be unheard of, but then it's also called a 'precision rifle' where you're looking at wanting to be in the 1/2" groupings.

It's just hard to set the right expectation when I see quotes from Rick saying that they're getting .5 and .75 MOA and then looking at the groupings it seems best is about 1.25 ish. So who knows if you just came back from running out targets and your a little out of breath, if there's a cute girl shooting next to you or what, so thats why I suggested the lead sled, then it's allllll about the gun and not the shooter.

I really like the idea behind it, I can call and pay for one right now if I wanted, so price doesn't really bother me but I do like to get good value for my money, so before I go spending $4k I want to know it's going to shoot at least as good as my $700 Howa with factory box ammo so want to see more of these range reports and get a better idea of overall accuracy and durability.

Keep the range reports coming! and thank you for the expense not only in ammo but in time.

Rick didn't say that's what they are getting out of the rifle, he said that's what he is expecting to see,, and from stormchasers and cr5's testing i bet with better ammo and better conditions its very likely to happen. These results were only from one rifle on what they said was a windy day, when mine shows up and i shot groups like that with a mix of ammo i would be pretty happy with it. I have high end guns if i wanted to shoot better groups, for a gun i can take out back and have fun with that shoots right around moa is good enough for me.

Something to bare in mind is that shooting a bolt gun for precision is dead easy compared to extracting consistent accuracy from a semi.
It is a completely different animal that requires a very consistent recoil path, a different trigger technique, different hold, etc.
A precise semi like a Baer or a gap-10, although an inherently accurate rifle, will let you know right away if you're not on the ball. By comparison, something like a trg, I can feel I've completely blown a shot, and it's only a very small variation in the group.

What the heck is going on here?
Stormchaser is a reputable member here. What's with the removal of content?
a) I want to see his thoughts about the MH, and
b) even grisly photos have their place, when used to educate about evil, etc. Otherwise, we wouldn't know anything about the horrendous crimes of Ottoman Turks, German Nazis, Imperial Japanese, etc.

b) horrendous crimes
British empire.
I'm acadian, my family is acadian, 350 years.
Enough said.
How easily we forget our own crimes!
Maybe I should ask Ottawa for reparations and damages, seems to work for the 1st nations.

a) As usual it turned into a bunch of nit-picking and people not understanding that just because they claim the rifle is capable of shooting sub moa you can't expect a rifle to shoot every type of ammo you feed it into tiny little groups, especially when being shot on a windy day without letting the rifle cool properly between test strings.

We went out and had a great time shooting it side by side with my AR-10 and the accuracy was very similar between the two rifles. We didn't have enough quality ammo with us to do anything representative of the rifles capability so we skipped out on that and just played to see who could make the smallest groups with the $20/box ammo we had with us.

I was getting frustrated with the posts as well but Stormchaser overreacted a little and posted something he should't have and got an infraction for it so he deleted all his posts and went over to the ATRS forum where the trolls can be easily deleted and the threads can be kept clean.

It's a great rifle and works very well, I'm still not totally convinced it's worth the $5000+ he paid for his but it is very well built and I'd love to own one.

Stormy needs to send me that thing so I can work up some loads with it and find out what it's really capable of.
I've found 308 auto loaders to be very picky about projectile type and powder charges.
Until somebody loads a broad range of cartridges and shoots some ladder loads, we will never know for sure what it is capable of.

Lol, that's what he wants me to do for him but I don't have time to reload for anyone else when I still have so many of my own rifles to develop loads for.
