Hello everyone I am looking at purchasing a new .338 Lapua. I checked out a Savage and Kimber. I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions for me from their own experiences. Any help would be greatly appreciated in my research before I commit to a gun. I am also up for custom suggestions and shops that you may know about. Thanks

I just picked up a Savage 110FCP HS Precision in 338 Lapua. It has been shipped and is on its ways. Unfortunately I wont be able to tell you how it shoots yet, but what I do know is that it is not easy finding brass for.

Your choice is really dependant on how much you want to spend! The only thing I would stay away from is the Remington 700P in 338. I have seen a tremendous amount of bad reports on other forums and the slow twist barrel wont let you capitalize on the benefits of heavy high bc bullets.

I picked up a Savage 110BA in 300WM. It shoots really well. Like Tcon said components for the 338LM are hard to come by and very pricey. If your looking for a good gun to shoot often, have a look at the 110BA in 300WM. Good luck finding one though.

The 110FCP HS precision is a smokin' deal. I was thinking about picking one up but there are insufficient funds in my gun buyin bank account.:(

Hey thanks I was looking at the savage's 110 ba and 110 fcp. I will be reloading, but heard the compoents and rounds are hard to find like you have said, Expensive too. I will check with Rick too thanks.

every thing about the .338lm is expensive, brass, poweder, bullets, barrel life...

its deffinatly not a learner or beginning rifle ( i say this based on your post count, but i know thats not an accurate reflection of shooters ability)

but its a hell of a blast to shoot, iv got a 110ba and while i havnt shot it much, from what i have im very impressed, i slapped together some hasty loads and i was quite impressed, 5 shots into 3/4MOA at 300 with zero load development

It is relatively expensive, particularly the initial outlay for brass. However if you can get around 10 reloads from your Lapua Brass (with annealing) the cost for shooting 1,000 rounds works out around $1.30 per shot before taxes. Or about $65 for 50 quality handloads.
This is way more costly than the 40 or so cents to shoot 223, again with quality components.

I would personally justify the cost by spreading those 1000 rounds over 2 years of shooting. :D

I have a Sako TRG 42 in .338 Lapua and love it. I think when it comes to picking a rifle you have to first decide your price range and second decide what you are going to use it for--- straight target shooting or hunting or both?? As far as components I sure haven't had any trouble finding them. I load Lapua bullets and use there brass as well. Peter at Hircsh Precision always seems to have what I need. As far as costs, ya its expensive to shoot compared to a .223 and other small caliber's. I know I shoot my 6br, 223's and 6.5x47 lapua way more than I shoot my 338... Big differance is at the 600 yrd gong at my buddies range the .223 barely pits the paint. The 338 Lapua knocks the 80 pound gong and stand over every time!! It has a fun factor that you can't put a price on....in my opinion.

Hi

I just moved to Canada from South Africa 2 months ago. I had a 338 Lapua there and just LOVED it. It was a locally built rifle. I have just ordered a Barrett 98B and hope to get it in about 4 weeks. They are around $5500, so a little pricey.

If you want to spend no more than $2500, also look at the brand new Weatherby Mark V TRR rifle in 338 Lapua. It's only $2499 from Cabelas Canada, and comes with the Bell & Carlson Medallist Tactical stock and Weatherby's accubrake. NICE looking rifle, and has a really nice smooth (SOLID) action.

Plenty of shops selling Lapua brass for the 338 - a bit pricey at around $290, but really good brass.

Just my 2c worth. :)

To help lower your shooting costs, just keep your eye open for some once fired brass.

I have a 338 Lapau in the Remington MLR. I'm a Remington fan and dont have any problem with the rifle. Like any rifle it could always use an upgrade here and there (ie. muzzle break, bolt knob).

Hey guys thanks for all your reply's. I have been looking at some of the suggestions. I like the Sako and Savage 110 ba and some of the custom rifles on ATRS have sparked my interest. I don't have the money for a timber wolf but can swing the other models. I am also happy to find out mystic precision has the parts I will need for the reloading process. I also agree some things you can't put a price on. Thanks again guys,

P.S. I do have lots of experience on the military side of things. Any time I can help anyone with some info I will be happy to post.

Just picked up a Savage 110 FCP a couple weeks ago and I have to say I am VERY impressed with this unit. Put a Zeiss Conquest 6.5-20x50 on it and started shooting. Sub inch groups at 220 yds off a bipod over the hood of my truck with Hornady 250 gr factory! Some day I will have a PGW or an Alberta Tactical, but this works for now.

.338LM components are NOT hard to find nor nearly expensive as they once were, I load higher end components for $1.10-$1.25 per trigger pull.

If you are into Rambo style shoots and you’re on a budget stick with a .223 but the .338LM is a pleasure to own and shoot.

Get a T-Wolf, sell your car, pimp your old-lady out, do what you have to…..

You will not regret it.

My Remington 700P has the a 1:10 rate of twist and I shot .713 MOA with one of my first loads with 300gr SIE MKs. Just my experience. Also I have found once fired brass, at a good price from people here on gun nutz.

Also some people don't like the shorter barrel on the Remington (24'" w/ 2" muzzle break) but it appears to shoot well so far :)
